I am running XP and get a problem with shutting down, it takes absolute ages. Restarting is not a problem, just shutdown. I have been on Microsoft's website, but seem to be going round it circles.

Does anyone have any pointers please?

Might have set 'clear the pagefile at shutdown' option
This slows the shutdown process considerably

Moreover there's a tool from Microsoft that helps u with such problems

It is called 'Bootvis'
Download & use it to speed bootup & shutdown
Read the Help
It has a considerably complex process
But, IT WORKS

My hints:
1.Defragment ur hard disk
2.Maybe u've too many programs or drivers running
3.Maybe u have open non-respondent Network connections

Most probably there's got to be an error in some system file.
Try the following:
Start your pc in safe mode and check if there's any error loading any driver or a .sys file (there may be a msg. asking u to escape
or skip a specific file). Then that means that some files required by XP to run smoothly have been altered.
It may even happen if you use your pc for a longer duration at one go, (OR) if there's some problem in the CPU's fan.
If the CPU get heated to a certain limit, then that may also cause this problem.
If you are experiencing the former problem, then the best solution is to reinstall XP. Hope this helps you.

You could try going to the 'My computer' Start menu. Left click on drive C logo. Go to properties / Tools and click the 'Check now box' then re boot. This will scan for any missing files or disc damage.

you have a program running that doesn't want to shut down. hit alt control delete, then the processes tab to get a list of what's running. try rebooting with that open. you should see which one is getting stuck. then decide if that program is worth keeping.
