It's another form of control that church has over the congregation. There was a time where it was indeed needed to make a church survive... And even today, without it, the church would be very poor. It's great to give to help your church, but to demand it, and an exact percentage at that... That's not right. One should give with their heart, not because they were told to do so.

Now-a-days, churches are established as a business center because they are confident that tithes will come in every Sunday. Government of some countries do ask churches to pay tax on tithes received!
Tithes as laid down in the bible should not be demanded. It should be given voluntarily by a cheerful wisher. For any church or any human being to DEMAND tithes, such a person is baterdising religion.
Tithes are what the Levites are authorised to use for their personal purpose. The Levites today are Church Ministers

The Scripture says to the effect that God loveth a cheerful giver. Though tithing is Biblical, I don't think it should be a prerequisite for membership within a given congregation. Tithes are meant to pay the pastor's salary, keep the lights and A/C on in the church, feed the hungry, serve in foreign missions and etc. Anything that is outside the outline of Scriptural use is wrong and shouldn't be forced on people.

I figure it this way....if orthodox jews , who are strict about obeying all the rules, don't pay tithes...then I don't have to
the church has confused the temple tax (building maintenance) in the OT with the tithe......the tithe is supposed to be eaten before the Lord once a year....not given to the church
the jews do not do not pay tithes now...because the only legitimate place to do this is at the Temple in Jerusalem, which has been destroyed....when they get it rebuilt, they will resume the tithe.
for the church, this has traditionally been a way to make money for the church...but this is not the purpose of the tithe.....this is also how preachers get rich...the tithe was never meant to support preachers.

Anyone who believes tithing (giving 10%) is demanded by God should be prepared to do all the other rules of the Old Testament. They should remember the Sabath (Saturday), they should not eat pork or shellfish, they should make sacrifices on an alter, etc... These are all rules of the Old Testament.
The tithe is a way that preachers get money from people by bribing them into thinking they will be smiled on by God and I think they will be judged by God for their lies and manipulation.

It's certainly not wrong to give and I think 10% is kind of the minimum we should give to God but I don't believe in tithing as a doctrine. As far as I'm concerned It isn't biblical.
It was an OT system that God ordained to provide for the tribe of Levi (the priests) because they did not have other jobs besides the priesthood.
As Christians we too should make sure that our pastors' needs are met. They work for the gospel and should be compensated for their time and effort.

Tithing was inaugurated in the old testament - it meant tax which you paid to the government to distribute the Law, which represented God and the Church. No where in the new testament is a tithe called for the "Church". You still paid the tax to the governing party as demonstrated by the coin with Caesars picture stamped into it.

The Catholic Church needs money to pay for lawyers for every paedophile priest they have that gets caught after assaulting choir boys.
And yes it DOES happen and YOU know it.
Also why should we give 10% of our money to the church ? If we give it should be done willingly not out of obligation or peer pressure. Get stuffed would be my answer but then I don't go to a christian church anymore, I stopped when I was 11, and I'm a better person for it.

The word 'Tithe" is an old English word meaning 1/10th - it is taught in the Old Testament that you give 1/10th of your income to the Lord*. It is used for paying for the church meeting hall, the pastor salary and the furthering of the gospel. Considering what the Lord has given us this is nothing, and we should be joyful in our giving.**
The Tithe is part of the moral law and is binding on people in the New Testament as it was in the Old Testament. However just as in the Old Testament the monies should not be sent to just anyone (e.g. some televangelist on the T.V.) - but instead to your local congregation.
