I work in a local authority for rubbish money and have a second bar job. The pay isnt great, little chance of development in near future but quite enjoy it.

Im therfore thinking of a change. Im in debt, have a degree but want more money. Should I go for something like a secretary that could be mindless but lots of money or keep lookign for the perfect job that might not be as much money.

Any thoughts or advice very welcome

you have to do what is right for you. i love my job and it happens to be a better paying job than my last one. i have a flexible schedule and am able to do things that i like to do while at work. it's a tough decision but i think it is more important to be happy than to be rolling in the money. but if you are barely making enough money to get by then maybe you should check into something that pays more.
good luck with whatever you decide!!

Firstly a secretary job isn't necessarily mindless, and the pay would reflect the complexity of what is expected from you.

Saying that I hated a well paid secretarial job that I had in an investment bank, and yes the money was good. BUT I was really unhappy and it look a toll on my life as a whole, so I went back to working in media. Luckily I got a well paid job and the balance is right.

If you just want the money - change jobs but don't forget that great money can't compensate for being unhappy! So really what I am trying to say is - get the balance right for you, if you love you job now why don't you speak to you employers and see what they can offer you before you decide to leave

It would be okay to do a job you dont enjoy for a short time (I have done this) just to get you out of debt. However if you spend years in a job you dont like just because of the money, you'll look back and realise you wasted all that time when you could have been doing something you love. Find something your passionate about and work at that! I did and I am know happier for it.

Keep looking. I had a mindless job for 12 years as I was petrified to quit it. I eventually plucked up the courage to give it up and go to university, and my life is so much better.Just working for the money is soul destroying and willleave you miserable. yes you will have more money, and stuff, but you will also dread Monday morning. The weeks will seem to drag on for longer than 5 days, and your weekends will be over in a flash. Life is too short, wait until you have found the perfect job for you and then go for it

As long as you are paying your debt slowly through monthly amortization, I wouldn't exchange a job that I enjoy with one with a higher pay but stressful one. Your term rubbish money makes me understand you don't fully enjoy your job. Since you are a degree holder, why not try applying to a greener pasture but wait for your appointment papers first before resigning to your present job.

It depends on your priorities. It could work to accept a mindless job that pays money for the time being while you keep looking for your dream job.

why not merge your two jobs? you can arrange to do some marketing and advertising for the bar in your office job - like maybe get the company to hold events and activities in the bar (with a little re-decorating of course). you never know - your office might need from your 2nd job that you just haven't thought of. think synergy.

Never sell yourself short! I did for two years, it nearly cost me my marriage. To quote my lovely wife,
"You used to come home, moan about work for 10 minutes, then we'd have dinner. Now you come home and all you do is moan!"
Thyis made me realise that its better to have a job you like and look around for something better, than to have loads of cash in a job you hate.
p.s. we're all in debt, its the way of the world right now.
