I can relate to you in a few ways. I'm 33 too, and making less money than I did in my mid 20's...My fiancee got her medical assistance certification while she was in her mid 20's...Anyway...
...If you are unable to start a business, then it seems like your best option is some type of schooling, esp. if you feel that there isn't much potential for upward mobility at your current job...
...i don't know what your hours are at your current job, but if there is ANY room for school, do it. You can get the financial aid. My fiancee is in nursing school right now, and she is financing it through grants and a few loans. She started going back to school in her 30's...Since you have a degree in a medical-related area, why not try to further your medical education and pursue a career in, say, ultrasound, or, phlebotomy? Making the sacrifice now will pay off in the long haul.

There is no status between life and death, just like nothing between work for yourself or work for someone else.
If you are no longer material to work for someone else then bite the bullet start something that you can live on.
Don't forget that the current administration is truly anti small business , the opportunities that were available for folks like you , have been gobbled up by the friend of a republican friend.

At least this I know, it's never too late to start something new. I started a new career when I was in my 30's already. I think you need to find time to really think what you want to do or what you want to be. I am hoping this will inspire you to "get things going" in your life. If you want to start a business, yes, it will cost you money but there are many ways (or resources) to get this. And remember to start small.

its not common, no. but i think its admirable that you can admit that you're feeling a bit lost at this stage in your life. you seem like a level-headed person. you don't have to retract, why not get in touch with people you worked with before and talk about putting up a partnership? that way you don't have to bear all the costs. or you can take some time off, reassess your priorities, sort of re-group. start from there. things have a way of turning out ok when you think you're stuck in a rut.

Maybe you are a born entrepreneur, and a leader, and that's might be why you have a hard time at finding your vocation while persisting to find a job.
