Shouldn't they be giving thanks to the person who bought the food and cooked it?Shouldn't praying over a meal be replaced with thanking the providers and if you are the provider then why thank anyone since you were the one who did the providing?

If God is the provider, why doesn't he provide for everyone? Is he really that bad of a provider to let people starve?I guess I could see why you would thank him in this case. But you thank a bad provider.Personally, I am thankful of those that actually do the providing.I can see their work and I can actually see them.I also provide for myself. When was the last time God went to the grocery store for me and bought my food with money he earned?

That reminds me of a quote from Bart Simpson (saying grace):

"Dear God, we paid for all this stuff ourselves, so thanks for nothing."

Instead of praying before I eat I try to take a few seconds to contemplate the fact that, if I wanted to, I could probably list hundreds of people who are responsible in some way for the food I'm about to eat. If there is a God or "invisible sky friend" to thank it's included in there.

Here's the prayer that my family and I say at mealtime before we dig in:

"Thank you Lord for this food. Thank you for the hands that prepared it. Thank you Lord, for everything. Amen."

That pretty much covers not only the overall provider, God, but mentions the people who provided it and prepared it also. If it so happens that you yourself are the provider, you thank God for giving you the good health, skill, etc. to provide for your family and loved ones.

You are too funny! Invisible sky friend! Nothing wrong with thanking the provider - you - too! It's just that some people believe that nothing is achieved without someone else, who grew the food, who processed it, etc. actual people.

It is so obviously clear that a sky friend is indeed responsible for all our food!

Duh!

It's like...the sun, silly!

Thank you sun, for the light that...oh wait...sound doesn't travel in the vaccum of space.

Oh well.

In my case, I thank God for a meal/food because He created it and provided it. I ask God to bless those who purchased, cooked and prepared it, and those who served it, etc. because they are doing a service - and they may need our prayers.

Even at home, I am not the provider. God creates, He provides my husband & I jobs to pay for necessities, a car to drive to work and store, a home in which to prepare and eat, etc.

It would be selfish and ungrateful to NOT thank Him.

In native american cultures....the great sky god...or the great spirit....is god...just by a different name. And when it comes down to it...I don't think God really cares what you call him....as long as you call him....all paths lead to the same place...in my world God doesn't worry about things like that....he knows what is in the heart.

It's quite simple really,
If you didn't have any food you would pray to something for some.

For the most part fear.. Fear of angering the inivisible sky friend and having to pay retribution..

Fear is the cornerstone of all religions... It's pretty sick and twisted...
