Traditionally antibiotics of the penicillin class were used for oral abcesses. Of the two medications you mention, the erythromycin would be most similar to a penicillin class antibiotic. There are others which would probably be more effective, but of those two use the erythromycin.

However, my recommendation is to see a dentist. Remember an infection in a tooth is only centimeters from the brain, don't take chances.

EDIT: on further reflection, both medications are indicated for dental infection, I feel the erythromycin has a broader spectrum of action and if using the medication empircally (without a designated organism) metronidazole would not be my first choice. Metronidazole is very good at anerobic coverage, but I would select it for intra-abdominal and other such infections and use the erythromycin for skin and oral issues and infections of the upper respiratory system first, in a pateint without a bacterial culture to guide me.

Different antibiotics kill different types of bacteria... what works great on gram-positive bacteria may be entirely ineffective on gram-negative. It helps to know at least the type of bacteria causing the infection, although generalizations can be made sometimes and a broad-spectrum antibiotic used.

However, metronidazole is effective against anaerobic bacteria... and since an abscess is an infection site isolated from regular tissue, it is possible that lower oxygen levels are present which favors growth of anaerobic bacteria.... so I'd guess metronidazole.

The antibiotics will ease the infection in your mouth but will not fully take it away so yes you still have to go back to the doctor to have the tooth or teeth properly taken care of. The mistake that most people make is that they think that if they take there antibiotics their teeth will feel better and they don't have to go back but what will happen is that the infection will flare back up. There is no reason to be terrified of the dentist, the dentist is there to make sure your mouth is healthy and take care of any problems you have. That's why dentists are constantly preaching about flossing and brushing so that way you won't have problems like this. Good Luck.

usually it is metronidazole and a penicillin combo that is used as the two combined cover a whole host of bugs usually found in the mouth.erythromycin can be used as a substitute for penicillin if there is an allergy etc.
