Yes. You can put it in a living will or write it on the back of your organ donor card or on the back of your driver's license.

Very possible indeed! I was a "tissue centre specialist" for several years before becoming a nurse. I dealt with "non-beating-heart" donors; Human Organ Procurement and Exchange (HOPE) coordinators (RNs) speak to family members of "brain-dead" donors.

Anyway, one part of my job was to conduct "end of life discussions" with the potential donor's family members (after a medical referral for the same). I work in Canada (not sure where you are); here, there is a place (on your healthcare card, not your driver's license) indicating whether you would like to donate your organs/tissues. It is something that plays a small role in determining whether a decedent will eventually become a donor. Most actual donors had neither a "signed card" nor an advance directive.

The family discussion with a member of transplant services usually takes place after a person dies (though sometimes the discussion occurs hours or a few days before if the family (or patient) makes the suggestion). In short, the discussion initially aims to determine what the *donor* would want ... that's where a living will (advance directive) comes in handy.

At the end of the discussion, a single document called "The Human Anatomical Gift Form" (the same one is used tissue donors as it is for organs donors and consent for medical research after death) is read to the family and note is made regarding which organs and tissues are to be left intact. The form is then read over bu the family, and a family member, a healthcare professional (e.g. RN, physician, social-worker) who witnessed the discussion, and the interviewer all sign it and it becomes a permanent medical record.

Because in most cases, the topic of donation has never been addressed between the potential donor and her/his family (most organ and tissue donors do not have living wills), the initial decision as to whether a potential candidate will have a his/her chart reviewed to determine donation suitability, or whether to defer, is based on the family meeting. The more the family knows about what they think the patient would have wanted, the better.

If you want to donate all your organs but your heart, it is a good idea to communicate this with your close relatives. You can also request to speak to your physician (e.g. family doctor) and have your physician write your wishes in your chart.

In any case, I commend your thoughtfulness on this matter ... all the best!

Organ donation is a personal decision made by the donor ahead of time or the donor's family at the time of donation. It is best to have a donor card on file, but having a written statement, you leave with your next of kin will provide the guidance when the time comes. Make sure your next of kin knows your feelings about donation, as even if you have a donor card and a statement in a living will, if the next of kin is available at the time of donation, their decision will supersede and documentation you have on file.

This has been done, as legal suits have been filed by family members saying that they had discussed the issue with the patient since the document was signed and the donor's wishes had changed, the donor just didn't have time to make the change before the accident (or other cause of brain death)

Also remember tissue donation, involves more than the lungs, herat, liver and kidneys. The eyes are frequently donated. Skin, bone, and other tissues are now used also. It is therefore called tissue donation rather than organ donation.

That's right....very possible. It is according to your own will to be an organ donor and you have all the rights to specify which organs you would like to donate. Aside from specifying it when applying or renewing a driver's license (which will be noted on the card), you should make a living will specifying your intention to donate which organs and which you would not not want to. Let your close friends and family be aware of your will as well. As you know, the consent of the family will be required before they will harvest any organs.

Well, you are far better than me. I had signed to be a corneal donor only. Quite selfish, isn't it.

Yes. On the organ donation form that you fill out you can state specifically what organs you want donated. You can also specify if you would like to donate your body for scientic research. On my organ donor card, I have stated they can use any organ needed, but that I did not want my entire body sent for scientific research. (my mom did this at UConn and it took 2 years to get her ashes back!) If you want to limit your donation to just one specific organ you can do that. Just specify you DO NOT want to donate your heart. Thank you in advance for donating organs. It is the best gift you can leave someone!

Yes it is possible. When you fill out the organ doner form (you can get one at your local DMV), you can specify what you want to donate. The choice is entirely up to you. You can even specify where you want your organs distributed. For example, if you want your lungs to be used in research at the American Lung Assoc. or if you would prefer a candidate for a lung transplant should get them. Whatever you decide is a very personal thing. There are no rules as far as that goes. What is done with your body after death is entirely up to you.
