Well, sorry I'm not a scholar or a pastor, just a Christain but I think I can help. Or at least I can try. : ) I don't know what bible verse this is from, but I remember learning that you give to God. You don't have to be a memember of a Church to give. You are always supposed to give something back. Even if it isn't much. The more you give back, the more you recieve. The money you have isn't yours. Nothing is yours. Everything is God's. You may have worked hard for what you have, but who gave you the strength and the opportunity to work hard? God did. Therefore, technically, in my beliefs, eveything is His. So we should give back to Him and He will give us more. Hope this helps!! Good luck!! : )

Tithing is mostly found in the OT. The tithe was a requirement of the law in which all Israelites were give 10% of everything they earned or grew to the Temple.{ Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:26; Deuteronomy 14:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5 are all verses that indicate such. } The New Testament doesn't say much.. Paul states that believers should set aside a portion of their income in order to support the church (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). But thats about it, So if you don't belong to a church then why would you follow this? I guess the answer is No.

At no time were first-century Christians commanded to pay tithes. The primary purpose of the tithing arrangement under the Law had been to support Israel’s temple and priesthood; consequently the obligation to pay tithes would cease when that Mosaic Law covenant came to an end as fulfilled, through Christ’s death on the torture stake. (Eph 2:15; Col 2:13, 14) It is true that Levitical priests continued serving at the temple in Jerusalem until it was destroyed in 70 C.E., but Christians from and after 33 C.E. became part of a new spiritual priesthood that was not supported by tithes.—Ro 6:14; Heb 7:12; 1Pe 2:9.
As Christians, they were encouraged to give support to the Christian ministry both by their own ministerial activity and by material contributions. Instead of giving fixed, specified amounts to defray congregational expenses, they were to contribute “according to what a person has,” giving “as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2Co 8:12; 9:7) They were encouraged to follow the principle: “Let the older men who preside in a fine way be reckoned worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard in speaking and teaching. For the scripture says: ‘You must not muzzle a bull when it threshes out the grain’; also: ‘The workman is worthy of his wages.’” (1Ti 5:17, 18) However, the apostle Paul set an example in seeking to avoid bringing an undue financial burden on the congregation.—Ac 18:3; 1Th 2:9.

Hi,
Tithing was required in Old Testament times only. It was levied upon the tribes of Israel to pay for the maintenance of the Levis who served The Lord but owned no land of their own. It was for their upkeep as also was some foods offered for sacrifice by the people.
New Testament giving is to ones own conscience.
May I ask, why are you being put in this situation, it could only be a miss guided church putting this pressure on you and you say you don't belong to one?
Check the following New Testament quotes where tithing is mentioned and note they all refer to the Jews; Matt23:23; Luke 11:42, 18:12; Heb 7:5,6,8,9. There is no other mention in the NT.

Tithing or putting any money in the offering plate is not "required". We are called to give cheerfully and to support our churches and the work that they do. It is also a way of giving back to God from the ways He has blessed us.
If you can give 10%, give 10%. If you can only give 1%, then give 1%. But, whatever you give, give cheerfully and not because you feel guilty or forced. One of our young moms who is trying to staighten our her life saves all of her change during the week and puts it in the plate. It's never much, but she is always proud that she can put something in and give back something to God.
Whether you are a member of a church or not, do remember that the church does have bills to pay, and the money has to come from somewhere. Pastor's salary, mortgage or rent, utilties, office supplies, worship supplies, etc. And every penny helps! (sorry, currently a church treasurer, where we live month to month!)

Tithing isn't required not even if you are a member of the body. Any offer to god is supposed to be of free will, and it doens't have to be exactly 10% (...). If you need biblical background on this, write me, I can get you. Probably you can too; I recomend the psalms, and the letters of the apostolic writings. (Also parts in the books of history of Israel, around the time of the building up of the temple in Jerusalem, in the end of king David's life.) / I hope this was of any help. MALACHI 3 SAYS WILL A MAN ROB GOD?
BY NOT GIVING THE TITHE TO THE PRIESTS.
EVERY THIRD YEAR ALL OF THE TITHES WENT TO THE WIDOWS, FATHERLESS, AND STRANGER IN THE GATE.
THIS WAS UNDER THE LAW.
IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
JESUS TOLD THE RELIGIOUS PEOPLE OF THAT DAY THAT THEY TITHED OF EVERYTHING AND THAT THEY SHOULD ,WHICH INCLUDED THE FRUIT OF THE GROUND.
THAT WAS BEFORE THE DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS WHICH FREED US FROM THE LAW. GALATIONS 3
YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO JOIN A CHURCH OR PAY TITHES NOW.
YOU GIVE OUT OF A LOVE FOR GOD AND THAT IS WHERE YOU SEE A NEED NOT A GREED AS SOME OF OUR MINISTERS ARE NOT TAKING CARE OF THEIR WIDOWS, OR FATHERLESS.
STEVEN IN THE BOOK OF ACTS CHAPTER 7 WAS STONED TO DEATH BECAUSE HE PREACHED REGARDING THE NEGLECT OF THE WIDOWS...THEY WERE NOT BEING TAKEN CARE OF.

Tithing isn't mentioned in the New Testament. Giving most certainly is. Your responsibility is first and foremost to God, and then to the community of believers. Pray about what you should give and give that. It could be your time, your talents, or your money. Or all of the above.

There is absolutely no tithing requirement for any new covenant Christian.
Christian tradition recommends charity based on your individual capability, guided by love and good sense.
Church or no church.

tything and giving are by your choice. no church can require it.
the apostle Paul did not require it of most of the small churches he fathered.
read his epistles. he also says that giving and tything have blessings in them for the giver, and bring praise to God.
in the case of ananias and saphira they had perhaps foolishly made a high pledge to give a certain amount probably suprised when it actually came through... then greed hit so they plotted together to lie in order to keep the greater share.
and they refused to admit so when caught.
i believe that if they'd just been honest they would not have died.
