Drugs and alcohol are never the answer and yes they will make it worse. And please do not hurt yourself or anyone else that will also make things worse.

It's because we want to avoid the pain we are feeling so we self medicate with alcohol/drugs which seems to be the answer due to being easier to get at the time. Alcohol, is a depressant as some drugs are too. It temp. takes away those unwanted feelings of depression only to resurface in a more negative way. Many ppl. are embarresed to get prof. help, dont have the money, or dont know the effects of alcohol/drugs ..etc..etc.. Sometimes when we are hurting we just want that temp. fix the just for now and it turns into a daily habit. Im glad you can see the differance.
Good luck

We turn to anything because we're so desperate to fight the feeling. No one likes to feel depressed. We like to feel on top of the world and happy. We think pills and alcohol will numb the pain. They actually work, but yes, they definitely end up making you feel less with it than before, but they CAN mask the symptoms too. It varies.

Life is like that, it's not fair and things happen.

We all try to cope.

Because they are cheap and available. We are reluctant to seek valued and knowlegable help from a therapist because we humans are stubborn and think we can figure everything out ourselves. [wrong!]
Thinking we are 'almighty' we don't use good judgment in finding the correct answers and the best help we can get. Pills & alcohol don't tell us what we don't want to hear...
Listening to therapists can help with our depressions because we can't do everything ourselves and haven't tried better methods to get relief.

Drugs and alcohol are a temporary escape. I speak from experience. Unfortunately it is wrong and bad for us, but when things go so wrong and your mind cannot process what is happening around you the only way to get by is to escape it

I don't know about the pill part, but alcohol yes........
Remember my Grandfather had these little placards, given to him by some of his lady friends.......they were framed, but just little "funnies"......One said, Never Trust a man who DOESN'T DRINK! and another one said, Yes I know, DRINKING will not cure YOUR problems! But it will sure as hell put them on "HOLD TILL TOMORROW!" It's funny how little things like that will stay with you. There is quite a bit of truth to the second one though!!..lol

it feels like a quick fix at the time, it makes us feel better for a little while, or so we think, but before long we have a serious problem and only feel worse about every thing.

Because people would rather deal with a headache than a life crisis. They need a new focus and a shove in the right direction.

Not me silly... I only take what I have to from the doc to numb the pain... and can't wait to be done. So far as alcohol...love wine....and have a coctail (or two or...) socially. I am generally very happy with life as it comes!

Go easy on yourself, Roz. Maybe sit down and write yourself a letter, get some fresh air... SOMETHING to distract you -- even if just a little for now.
