The Army determined that the top two preventable means of death in a combat situation were from loss of blood and inability to breathe. For example, a Soldier is shot and he "bleeds out" before he received treatment. So the Army came up with a one week course for Soldiers to train them on first aid techniques to help save the lives of fellow Soldiers receiving injuries to these two types.

We learn a lot about tourniquets, bandages, pressure points, etc. to stop bleeding; administering IVs for fluids and blood expanders; techniques for restoring breathing (nasal pharangeal, needle chest decompression for tension pneumothorax, etc.)

It's not really a first aid course, but an immediate lifesaving course for combat type wounds.

CLS is like a step below a full blown medic. It's a collateral duty on top of their regular job. It's not hard. A couple of no-brainer workbooks and a couple of IV's and you're done.
