My partner has a new job working reno at a hospital. He came home today with a cold sore and neither of us has ever had one before. He thinks he caught it there, but how common would this be? How long the the virus lay on inorganic surfaces? Wouldn't it have to be a bit more direct like I have one, I drink a drink, you drink right after me and now you have one? Either way, I know he's not off kissing someone with a blistered lip (or even a non-blistered one for that matter).

There are two kinds of infections — primary and recurrent. Although most people get infected when exposed to the virus, only 10 percent will actually develop sores. The sores of a primary infection appear two to twenty days after contact with an infected person and can last from seven to ten days.

How do you get herpes?

Most people get Type 1 infections, which cause cold sores, during infancy or childhood. They usually get it from close contact with family members or friends who carry the virus. It can be transmitted by kissing, sharing eating utensils, or by sharing towels. The sores most commonly affect the lips, mouth, nose, chin, or cheeks and occur shortly after exposure. Patients may barely notice any symptoms or find these sores annoying and seek medical attention.

I suspect I caught mine from Mother-in-law when she lived with us, who had a habit of rinsing a glass out with cold water and putting it back in the cupboard, and frequently had cold sores when doing so!

Although they tend to only appear on your mouth, any physical contact can spread the disease. For example, if he touched someone's mouth and then didn't wash his hands before he touched his own mouth, that could cause it to spread.

Because of the nature of the virus, it is highly unlikely to catch it from something like a towel or clothing.

According to Go Ask Alice, there is another, albeit less likely way to get it.

"In addition, though much less likely, transmission may occur from a person who has herpes with no sores presently active through the "shedding" of virus particles from the skin and "landing" on the mucous membranes of another person."

I developed them in the 1990s and not from kissing too. My suspicion was that I had drunk from a coffee cup (in a coffee bar) that hadn't been washed properly (the dishwasher had left coffee stains on the side of the cup), and stress makes it worse - I was stressed at the time.
