I've heard it said that you have to pander to the Christians to be elected in this country. Why are the educated so weak in politics? Why should religion upstage knowledge at every point in history? Even Darwin's work was lessened by the religious nuts.

Education aims at enhancing knowlege and using it for the sake of well being of one's country and mankind. Educated people need not set up organisation to function as pressure group. There is no linkage between education and christianity as such because educated perosns are not a class by themselves but they also belong to various religions and some of them could be athiests. When christians are a majority, it is natural that they have a greater say in politics. But it is the moral duty of educated people to persuade the citizens to regard religion as their personal belief and not be influenced by religious considerations while participating in politics and voting.

First of all I think the more educated you are the less likely you are to conform to any group of likeminded associations. Being elected to public office requires appealing to the masses.By claiming association with a religious ideology it projects the idea that they have a sense of morality which will also appease decent minded people even if they have no beliefs in a god or not. It's kind of like firing a shot gun. You basically spray shot gun pellets in a general area hoping to hit something as opposed to hitting a specific target with a dead on accuracy needed from a single bullet. Sometimes it does feel like our elected ones are firing shot guns at us.

The Christians go to church on a weekly basis, good luck getting us atheists to waste so much time organizing.

But the reason for the religious grip in politics is because a VAST majority of people in the USA are Christians. Politicians know this and kiss their ***.

There are quite a lot of educated christians. This is quite the loaded question. Some of the greatest scientists, philosophers, politicians and artists were also religious!

Religion is the opiate of the masses and a drug induced mob has more sway then any rational few.The rational are in the minority because the drug (religion) is as tempting as it is addictive to those who would rather abandon rationality for simple and easy answers.
