find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 400-500cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), weight training a few days a week but never work on the same muscle group two days in a row (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

You will not go on a diet; you only need to change your life style. For good.
Since you spend less calories at night, eat a light supper (1/2 your plate of veggies, 1/4 of meat and 1/4 of potatoes or rice). Do not eat after supper and drink a lot of water. Avoid pop since it is loaded with sugar. Avoid fried foods and rich sauces. Choose to eat chicken and fish instead of beef. Eat whole grains instead of white bread or white rice. It will fill you up faster. Get rid of the junk food, or keep it where you cannot see it. And, most importantly: exercise.
Swimming is good because it puts less stress on your joints, but a Ph. D in Physical Education told me that walking is the best exercise to loose weight. If you have a dog, you got your exercise buddy! When I listen to my favorite music I can go on for a long time.
Do not skip meals. Your body will believe there is no food around and it will store more fat than usual. Eat fruits or low fat yogourt for snacks. Sometimes you think you are hungry but in reality you are thirsty. You are at an age where you need all your vitamins instead of starving yourself, so exercise is very important.
Find yourself a support circle, like friends, family, etc. Maybe your school has some kind of a program for that.
Ask you parents to join a gym and you could all go together. Dr. Phil wrote a book that might help you: Weight Loss Challenge for Teens. Check out this web site:

Good luck, and congratulations for choosing health.

Hey there! I was in your same shoes kiddo, so I want to make sure you don't make my mistakes.
First off you are 13, trust me hormones are going to play a part of your weight. By the time you're about 16/17 your weight will "distribute" to other areas.
Secondly, eat good foods, lots of fruit and veg, lean protein, and whole grain/wheat!
Third, get involved in an activity, dancing, sports, biking, anything is good.
and finally don't over do it and try to win the race to become part of the "thin is in" group. I did that when I was 14 and went from being 30lbs overweight to being 60 lbs underweight in three months. Now that IS unhealthy.
Best of luck beautiful!
