Because that's what i've read, but i've heard that some school might not, but for those that do, do you learn pretty much the same stuff as in Kenjutsu or just a little bit? In short, do you learn basic Japanese swordmanship in Aikido? I also heard that it teaches Bo Staff?

Thanx in advance for your help, peace out.

Nippon Kan Aikido (Homma Sensei) Spends a lot of time teaching the relationship between kenjutsu techniques and tai jutsu (empty hand) techniques. For more information check out Gakku Homma's book "The Structure of Aikido"

Ok if your going to learn swordsmanship you need to know a few things. That one guy is right your shouldn't use a real sword at first( you still dont want to use a real sword even when your experience altleast not with a partner. Wooden replica is not correct terminology. The term is bokken. Sounds like boe-ken. It's a katana crafted out of wood for practice purposes. I learned most of my swordsman ship from movies and japinese anime. Which actually teach you good sword strikes and blocks and such. Also try YouTube. There are a variety of channels dedicated to tutorials on swords and other weapons. The whole point of learning this is self defense. I mean are you going to be walking around town with a katana and someone gonna try to fight you with their katana? No. Learning this is so you can have proper stance and agility so say someone breaks in yor house you can take your katana and properly defend yourself. Also when you do decide to get a katana. You don't want anything made out of stainless steel. Something hand made would do best which you can find new on eBay or from various sword sites. If its 60$ or less it's likely crappy and if it doesn't state the type of metal used in the sword ex: 1060 carbon steel, 1060 katana. Then it is most likely 1045 which is crappy and flimsy and will bend trying to cut a water bottle in half. Have fun!

Katana Sword Forms

some schools might not but normally any aikido club should teach the ways of the sword and the staff. Much of aikido was developed upon principles taken from ken- and jojutsu To really understand these techniques one must be familiar with the ways of the sword and staff. The enterpretation of the usage and teaching the way of the sword however varies from school to school. Some just see it as a guiding tool while others see it as a quintessential part of aikido. Some see the boken (wooden training sword) as a weapon in its own right, while others will always point out the reality of the real live sword. The enterpretation will differ but normally every half descent school should teach you how to handle sword and staff. it really is a necessity in order to understand aikido

Aikido empty hand forms basically employ the same footworks and forms used in Kenjutsu and staff fighting. At higher levels, Aikido students are taught Suburis or sword forms with a bokken or wooden sword to complement their training. The purpose is not to teach you how to use the weapons but how to defend against them by becoming familiar with their proper use. It also aids the students in learning proper footwork, maai or correct distance gauging, tai sabaki or body movement and proper breathing. As an added bonus, it also strengthens your forearms and grip. The Jo or short staff is also taught at higher levels. Although mastery of both weapon forms are only required when one reaches Nidan and Sandan level, some senseis still teach their students the basic weapons forms at earlier levels anyway for the cross training benefits.

Okay it may not be in the city you're or near by but this link leads to my dojo's website you'll find all the info about Aikido (which is more hand to hand budo)and Iaido(which is the study of the sword) With Aikido you also can learn the way of the Jo(bo staff). In Iaido you practice with a boken.

If you look up AIKIDO TODAY mag website you can order some excellent videos by MASTER NISHIO in which he demonstrates AIKIDO technique as an empty handed self defense technique then immediately follows it by demonstrating the relationship to sword and jo technique as sword versus sword// jo versus sword etc.

The jo is actually a shorter version of the 6 ft more common bo.Usually 48 to 52 inches long it allows for rapid use of either end in close.
