Of course! Just use a wooden spoon. The recipe might even say how many strokes by hand instead of time on mixer. Instead of a wooden spoon, if you have a rotary beater use that and you'll save a lot of arm motion. Most cakes just need to be well beaten but a few need extra mixing (by hand or mixer) to add air.

Yes you can. If you are making it from scratch the following would be needed to help mix:
-A wooden Spoon -a spatula
Although you would notice, you would have to put more effort. Althought here is an old baker's tip:
cream the butter and sugar together before making a cake. Creaming is like mixing it together until everything it fluffy. It will take a while but the results are worth it. Oh, and you have to make sure you don't over mix or else the cake will turn out tough in a sense.
I think the old-fashion way is totally the way to go:)

Yes. It may not come out as well, but an egg whisk/egg beater should do the trick. Just make sure that the batter is at the right consistency.
People have been baking cakes before electricity!

Sure. In order to get more air into the mix as electric beaters do, hold the bowl under the crook of one arm, tilt it and them mix it with a wooden spoon or whisk using the other hand.
Mixing or beating this way lifts the batter up and allows much more air into the mix. You can also hand beat whipped cream this way as long as the cream, bowl and whisk start off very cold.

Of course. Cake mixes and recipes used to have directions for hand mixing, usually measured in "strokes". As in "add milk & eggs to flour mixture, beat for 50 strokes." It's not that hard and the cake turns out fine (plus you build some nice lean muscles).
