Alzheimers is a form of dementia.

It is often present for many years before diagnosis.

It rarely (if ever) kills in itself, it just increases the chance of other things killing you as you become less able to function.

How long someone lives after diagnosis can vary.

My mother-in-law went 7 years from diagnosis to death, but with hindsight we suspect she went undiagnosed for anything up to 10 years!

A friend's mother lasted over 20 years after diagnosis.

First of all, let me say I'm sorry to hear about your mom.

I think it all depends on the age of the person and the form of it they have. I know there are some forms that eventually shut down the organs. My grandmother had that form.

She was diagnosed with it after she fell and broke her hip in '02, the surgery (more like the anesthesia) brought it on full force. She finally passed away in 05 when her heart shut down.

It's one of the hardest things to deal with, I know. Just continue to love her and be there for her, even though there might be days when she has no idea who you are.
