great question, made me laugh. but dont worry someone will come up with reason for their actions its only americans who do bad things.

I love how most of the world is guilty of slavery at some point in history but its only thrown in america's face.

Great Question

ADDITION: I told you they would be excused. When its America the choice of word is occupier but the Spaniards they settled there. Makes it sound like they floated in on a cloud throwing candy.

The "now resident" people are also part of the people who occupied the lands when the Spaniards conquered it. Much like the rest of the world, the "national borders" in the New World changed with wars and battles over time.

The Mayan Empire controlled parts of south Mexico.
The Aztec Empire controlled most of central Mexico.
Other INDIAN tribes controlled other parts of Mexico.

The Spanish put them down with many other INDIAN civilizations and tribes across the New World. They CONQUERED them and converted them by the sword.

Eventually, Colombia and Mexico rebelled. Eventually all of the New World was free from it's European overlords. This was finalized with the Spanish American War in which Cuba was given her independence from Spain and not granted the territorial status that she and Spain wanted for her from the US. Well except for the Bahamas and a few other islands which is still part of the British Empire, technically.

I'm going to be brief on this. I live in Mexico and I am a Mestizo also. My ancestors are both from spain and from native americans from central mexico. We mexicans did not stole the land because we were in part here in the first place. There is a lot of antagonism about ilegal inmigration from Mexico to the US in general, not only the southwest as it was many years ago. And yes, all the southwest was lost in the 1847 in the Mexican-American war, we lost Texas, New Mexico (why do you think is call that duh!), nevada, california, Arizona, part of utah and montana and god knows what more. You just need to see the names of the cities: San antonio Texas, Raton New Mexico, Sierra Nevada, Los angeles, on so on, and so on. My humble point of view about this is: yes it was lost in a war that was created by the US, you can access information and verify this. Yes the mexican government was corrupt and inept so they lost more than 50% of the original size of the country, yes the US attempted to make it "legal" paying $2.0 M USD in gold for that land. Yes in Mexico in the schools we learn to see the US as the bad guys who stole our destiny to be a greater nation than we are now. Yes the US thinks that Mexicans are thinking on getting back that land again. it is complicated but one thing is for sure, the bond between both countries are getting stronger with each year, a lot of people (non-latin) speaks little spanish and it is the same in Mexico, we speak in english each year more and more.
Personally, I hope in the future, Canada, USA and Mexico will become one country the same way the European union is today. I also hope that our politicians in Mexico and teachers will eventually stop teaching that in the beguining, Mexico was a country from California to Panama (and it was) and start to teach what Mexico is now and what should be, not focusing in a glorius past already gone and put hate in the heart of the Mexicans because the US Army put the american flag in the National Palace in Mexico City more than 100 years ago. that does not makes sense. nacionalism should be relegated to futbol soccer world cups only......

Different indigineus people occupiede.
But Mexico was not stolen, it was created on mixing races. Spaniards, in difference to what hapenned in USA, only came men, without women. So, guess, they took indian women and so, the mexican race begin. We, mexicans, didn't stole no one, we were born and created here.
There were to much more indians than aztecs and mayans, you should study mexican history, and you will find different races and cultures across Mexico, some more mixed than others, some more "whites" some more "indians".

The Aztec Indians occupied the area that is now Mexico, they were very barbaric, practiced human sacrifice, and had slaves. Their slaves and human sacrifices were captured from conquered tribes. The conquered tribes allied with the Spaniards when they arrived, and the Aztecs were defeated. The Hispanic people now in Mexico are descendants of the Spanish conquerors (conquistadors in Spanish), and some of them intermarried with the natives later.

Native American tribes: Apache,Zuni,Navajo,Hopi,Tohono,O`odham, and Utes as far as I know. The Utes were related to the Aztec who were also there. Then along came the Spanish and mixed with them, then it became Mexico. Everybody migrated from somewhere and the original site was Babylon[which is present day Iraq!!] I always mention the Tower of Babylon because of where God was mad it was built. He wanted people there to move around and multiply. They wouldn`t so Hechanged their language when it used to be one and they all moved on and migrated to where all countries started.

No one stole it! Well the Spaniards did come and conquer But the Aztecs were there first and Mexica! Then the Spaniards came and mixed with the Aztecs! Then it became Mexico. So technically it ALWAYS belonged to Mexico. Check your facts! I'll give you the Answer that I gave to little Mrs. Marciana, which by the way never responded back because she is still thinking of a come back!

How do you think that people became Mexicans? The Spaniards came to Mexico and settled, then they procreated with the indigenous. That is how Mexicans came about. New Mexico,California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona did belong to Mexico befor the Mexican-American War nearly 160 years ago.

go to the part where it says The Army of the west

Here is a direct quote from a PBS article
"Additionally, the Spaniards also brought the tradition of mestizaje (the mixing of races). In Spain, they had mixed with Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, northern Europeans, Arabs and Jews. So when the Spaniards encountered highly developed societies like those of the Aztecs, Mayas, and other Mesoamerican cultures not only did the Spaniards dominate them, but they also mixed with them biologically and assimilated some of their customs and lifestyles. The paradox of the Spanish conquest was that the Spaniards were proud of their European (Hispanic) culture and they tried to continue it in America, but in the specific case of Mexico, they created something different, a new society and a new culture."

You can't argue history if you don't know the real facts!
I did read your weak links, so Spaniards had control of a lot of western countries at the time! You can say the same for the British! What do they have now? You want to go further back in history?
edit:
The 1500's yeah no computers back then! J/K Your links are written by who knows who. Your question says "Why do Mexicans think that New Mexico belonged to them....? Etc. I am answering your question with a FACT. It did belong to them! If you would like to rephrase your question to "Why do Mexicans think they were the first people here.. etc? then that would be different. Wouldn't it? Technically, indigenous people were the first here. Of which Mexicans are decendants, so I guess we were the first to be here! Here's another RELIABLE link. I know what I am talking about too!

go to the part that says "Original peopling of the Americas"
The Aztecs (from mexico) were here BEFORE the Spanish came and conquered so technically it was their land. They owned what is NOW Mexico. But it also belonged to China at one point.

Wow, how sad that people don't know their history, they just like to believe what is convenient to them!

STUPID. MEXICO NEVER STOLE ANTYHING. The Spanish may have, and the French attempted, but the new spanish and native americans (mestizo, mixed) became independent from Spain. THe Mayans and the Aztec native americans occupied the land. The Aztec capitol, Tenochtitlan, is basically Mexico City. After the Mexican-American War the southwestern states were given in the Treaty of Guadalupe HIdalgo in the amount of $15 million.

Very little Native AMericans live in Mexico. Native Americans only apply to Amerindians who are indigenous to United States. Amerindians in Mexico are refered to indiginous. Aztec only owned a fraction of Mexico. Right now the Mayan related people from Southern Mexico are rebelling against racism from Mexicans. the Aztec only controlled less than half of what is now Mexico.

Native Americans.

But of course, most Mexicans have a little Native American blood, as there were a lot more Native Americans in Mexico than the US.
