"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate voted on Tuesday to block funding for a Bush administration test program to let Mexican long-haul trucks operate in the United States under 1994's North American Free Trade Agreement.

One day after a fiery truck accident killed dozens in Mexico, the Senate approved an amendment to a transportation spending bill that would cut off funding for the test, which the administration authorized last week to run for one year.
The House of Representatives has passed a similar measure.
The White House on Tuesday threatened to veto the broad transportation bill because it would spend more money than President George W. Bush requested. It said the administration opposes any restrictions on the cross-border trucking program."
What do you think?

Seems to me that Bush opposes everything that doesn't go his way. I wish he would just give me a blank check to spend anyway I choose.
Those trucks don't need to be on our highways. Especially when the border security check points have already admitted that they'd only spend time enough to check 1 % of those 3,000 or more trucks crossing the border. And someone from the Department of Transportation who happens to have a conflict of interest going on here, isn't the answer to check those trucks either. Besides if these trucks were part of the NAFTA agreement, shouldn't have this BS been going on since NAFTA came into agreement, and signed.
Edit: To add, USA has already been complying with the NAFTA agreement of allowing Mexican trucks here in the states. They cross the borders, and drive 25 miles to their destinations as it is. So how is it now, according to Bush, that we are not complying with the agreement?! I don't think it said anywhere in the agreement that we Americans have to lend all our thousands of miles of roadways to a foreign country. Especially at our expense, and peoples lives.
And Slew - To over-ride that veto Congress has to gather their convictions, and have a majority of Congress members defeat Bushes veto. Americans need to get them to DO JUST THAT!

Two years ago a Mexican truck driver in the San Diego area killed two children and their grandparents who were there on vacation from the east coast.
The CHP said it was a faulty truck not the drivers fault. So no arrest was made but the drive and truck disappeared across the Mexican border never to be seen again and No recourse for the family.

It's great news, but W being W it's to soon to celebrate, knowing that W never let lack of funding or the will of the people get in the way of what he wants, he will have a signing statement and take the money out to existing funds.

Yet again -- you are like a "stethoscope on the heart of DC"
This is GREAT news --not only for the satety of American roadways BUT to the thousands of American truckers out on the roads every single day that would have had to contend with this garbage on a minute by minute basis every waking moment they were "on the job" !!!
It is SO rare anymore that we get any kind of encouraging ANYTHING out of Washington -- This is indeed RARE !!!
Thanks for a "heads up" on this --- it is already in my bulk mailer on its way to at least two dozen people who will be breaking out the champagne this evening offering up a toast to --- of all entities in the world --- the US Senate !!!!

The proof will be in the pudding. Will they tell the NAFTA commission to kiss our feet? We (USA) decide who gets to go where in the USA. Not a bunch of functionaries!

Let's keep voice our discontent with the soft approach that the politicians have been taking so far and hopefully they would hear us somehow.
