In 1991 scholars identified the model of the Mona Lisa, art historians, Janice Shell and Italian Archivist Grazioso Sironi found 16 century legal documents, indicating the model for the painting was Lisa, the wife of a Florentine merchant. She was named the model for the painting after the artists death in Georgio Vasaris, book, Lives of the Artists, published in the 1540's.

Not true. The smile was an unusual feature of a portrait of that era, that's one of the reasons it is famous.
Perhaps because Leonardo was in love with her and having an affair with her.

nobody knows really. that's why everyone thinks the painting is so mysterious. i suppose she just had something on her mind, looks like she was thinking something to herself; to tell the truth, it never intrigued me very much! maybe he painted her smile 'weird' and she wasn't smiling like that at all! nobody knows.
