I'm assuming it's the same reason there are promises of virgins in other religions.

It's all about the creature comforts for some believers. Think about it. How much of what Christians say heaven will be like is nothing but wanting more than what they have? How many would want to set by the feet of God if they burned while they did it?

Gold is malleable and I imagine it would be an excellent road surface. Rev 21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
Rev 21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
Rev 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

As to WHY heaven is built the way it is, I don't know an answer that I would consider good; other than to refer to what God has said: Psa 16:11 Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

Because those who invented it were men who valued gold...there's no rational reason for it, gold wouldn't make a very good street material...and BTW, are there cars in heaven, or does everyone walk everywhere? Why streets if no cars? Do they burn gasoline? What is the price per gallon, and where does the money come from?

Heaven's a nonsense concept when you think about it.

It's a human expression of no worries or cares. When you make it to heaven you have NO worldly woes.
What era did this come from and from which country? What lifestyle?
How else do you express something grand when your knee deep in mud and crap. People dying from so many ills you lost count. It's simply humans talking to other humans.
Because no one has come back to answer questions of what we will be doing or how life is in heaven. Right? right.

Because God wants heaven to have streets of gold. Sure beats the lake of fire and eternal suffering.

Because It's a highly prized Metal. How many of you want to have better things In this life ? Where do you think that desire came from ? You came from heaven,as God created each one of us. Wanting to have the best Is a God given Gift. Look where we came from before coming to earth and God giving us to our parents. We were In God's glory. Have you heard It said ? Oh Miss So &So died. SHe went HOME to be with the Lord. You can't go to a place and call It home Unless you've been there before...

To show us that things that we hold with value will be meaningless in Heaven to be trampled on in Heaven. Things we spend our entire earthly life trying to acquire will be the least value there. Everything in Heaven will be better than the best things on earth.
For people who don't know God this world is as good as it will ever be for them.
For people who trust the Lord earth will be as bad as it will get

Gold signifies the heart of the believer. It is said, in the Bible, that we are tried as gold. Tried meaning through the fire.

Why wouldn't Jesus speak of heaven as paved with gold?

I woulda thought gold had no value in heaven. Also, since it has such malleability (easy to shape), they'd have to work overtime to service the streets cos they'd continually get dings & dents in them & go out of shape from normal day to day use.

When does the clay say to the potter why have you made me thus?
We can only speculate, unless someone is saying they came back and were told why.
I do think there will be things revealed...
Maybe it is because we are to be refined as or like gold. Other metals are lesser or not as valued or good or refined as gold.
And aren't there other references to gold in the Bible?
