i've been trying for about an hour now trying to figure out how to create a histogram with non numerical values. i'm suppose to create a histogram for the gender section. i know how to do it the cheating way by just changing all the values with any histogram, but how would i do it the proper way? for examples, there are four females and fourteen males in a column in excel... what do i do to make it a histogram?

You have to create a simple little table and then graph that data.

For example, if your gender data ("M" or "F") is in B2:B19, you can set up this little table to get the data:

in D2: M
in D3: F
in E2: =COUNTIF(B2:B19, D2)
in E3: =COUNTIF(B2:B19, D3)

- Select the area D2:E3 and Insert Chart.
- Pick a column Chart.

Add detail, or e-mail, if you need more info.
Cheers.

In Excel, a histogram is a chart (usually a simple column chart) that takes a collection of measurements and plots the number of measurements (called the frequency) that fall within each of several intervals (called bins). For example, a histogram can show you exactly how the test scores of all students who took the test measure up.

Or in your case maybe how many students are either male or female - but I don't think that is a good way to try to use a histogram. And you do have to use numeric input.

You may have to ask your teacher for more information.

WELCOME TO HELL, lol. Jokes aside, using Ctr button you should be able to select more than one dataset during histogram creation. If that doesn't work, try poking around in the properties of an existing histogram, especially the data source property.
