If you knowingly purchased your car "as is" then you have probably voided any lemon laws. You still might have a case if you can prove that the deal had some fraudulent elements to it -- for example, if the odometer was rolled back or the dealer lied to you about whether the car had been in any serious car accidents, if the vehicle was previously salvaged and made to run again without your knowledge, etc. So, you'd first have to prove that this kind of fraud occurred and then take the dealer to at least small claims court.

Unfortunately, if you purchased the vehicle and the contract states that the vehicle was AS IS, then you are probably stuck. The used car dealer sounds like a rip-off artist to me. I would suggest that you contact your local Better Business Bureau and ask them what your recourse is.

Assuming it was a used vehicle bought as is you may in fact have no recourse. To be sure, consult an attorney and find out what the state laws say about as is sales; where you live.
If your check has not cleared yet stop payment on it immediately. If you are successful doing that you are in a much stronger negotiating position.

You bought the car AS IS which means that you have to pay for any and all repairs needed for as long as you own the car!
Did you have the car checked out by your own mechanic prior to purchase? If not, why not?
You will have to pay to have the car repaired!
Sorry

I'm new to the US and don't know all the local laws yet, but surely the "Lemon Law" would cover this situation?
Check this site out, you have to select what state you are in for specific details: http://www.lemonlawamerica.com/
