I would try to feel empathy for someone who has such a fatalistic, cruel view of the world. I would also tell myself that some people just aren't parenting material. As they say, people need a license to drive but any old body can make a baby. For the sick child who persevered....you were meant to be a part of this world. Enjoy it.

First of all
I could only imagine a scenario like this for I was blessed with two outrageously gifted and loving parents !!
Next, I would have to question the MOTHER'S idea and motivation at telling a son or daughter this --- true or not !!
This would be a devestating thing to be told by ANYONE --
Especially one's mother about their father !! If it were to have been the case for ME -- my next move would be to confront my father and have him tell me HIS side of this and learn FIRST HAND what his thinking could have possibly been !! For even if one thought that someone would possibly be "better off dead" -- they would not simply stop caring or visiting and making every attempt to make what they could better OR showing their love and care for that person !!
And, if I learned that it was in fact true --- I'm afraid that my view of my own father would take a harsh turn to "who needs HIM" !!

It wouldn't bother me, but I would get to pay him back when he was in the hospital on his death bed as an old man.
I would have my mom tell him I'm not visiting him because I think he is better off dead.
What goes around, comes around baby!

i wonder why a mother would say something like that to their child.. even a grown child.. sorry, but even if that happened and my husband felt that way about our child, i wouldn't tell my kid that, even after they'd grown.. there is no reason to say such a hurtful thing.. just hope that the father eventually saw the light and learned to love their child no matter what..

I would have to talk to my father about that and find out his side and if it was all true i would forgive him and be the better person and still be there for him if he wanted me to be.
