the walther isn't nearly as accurate as the Ruger Mk III series pistols, and the ruger will shoot any 22 lr ammo reliably.. where as the walther prefers hotter loads. I know the walther looks cooler, but if your looking for survival.. I'd go with the most reliable and accurate I could find. The ruger mk III is the most accurate pistol I've ever shot.. and it's still American made. It's just as rugged and reliable as the 10/22.

I'm not saying that the p22 is a bad pistol; but if you're looking for a "kinda survivalist handgun" in 22lr, why not keep it in the family. A Ruger 22/45 is a great little gun, tough, reliable and accurate. Lighter than the regular Mark II or III so a little easier to pack around than the steel framed Mark II or III.

The Walther P-22 is an excellent little pistol. It is accurate, fun to shoot, reliable, comes with changeable grips for smaller or larger hands, can be fitted with a laser sight and has an available 5" barrel that can be swapped out. It is also sold with a variety of finishes. Mine is nickle but for your purposes the finish that looks like black ceramic is probably best. The laser and longer barrel each cost around a $105. more.
One piece of advice for the new P-22 owners: Learn to disassemble for cleaning and don't lose anything that comes with your pistol in the box. There is plastic dowel that is easy to miss (or misplace) that without you won't be able to reassemble your pistol. I had to take all the pieces back to the dealer and have their 'Walther' man show me how it was reassembled. That was sooo embarrassing.
Addendum: JB (Poster above my post) is absolutely correct; these little Walthers prefer the hottest .22 ammo available. Forget the subsonic unless you don't mind jamming.

I would put my money on a more reliable gun like the stainless steel Ruger 22/45 pistol with a 4 " barrel.

I have had one for over 3 1/2 years now. I have put around 10,000 rounds through it (Remington GB from Walmart). Mine is very reliable and can consistently hit a soda can at about 15 yards. If you decide to get one, do yourself a favor and get at least 2 more mags. Good luck...

i sure like that Walther its a cool lookin weapon and is ready for all the accessories you can imagine. Price is right too. Here is the rub though and the reason i dont have one..grip is too small for my big hand! I like the Sig Mosquito a lot too but a little pricey!

I have not shot the P22, but a friend of mine has a Sig Mosquito. The first couple of range sessions we had issues with it feeding rounds, but we were told to use CCIs and it works flawlessly now.

I've had a P22 for about 6 years. I love it. I enjoy shooting it over my 9mm. It's fun AND cheap to shoot and pretty accurate. You want to clean it, especially where the mag feed sits. After shooting I did get one jam one time. In 6 years of weekend shooting ..

Just bought one and I've put 750 rounds through it with no problems. I love it. Plus it's small and fits in your pocket. Just don't forget the key if you lock it (integrated lock). I felt kinda dumb asking for a key at the range but they had needle nose pliers that worked. Oops.
