Oh what a terrible decision to make.
I have seen 3 legged dogs and they seem to get around o.k.
Better to be alive with 3 legs then dead with 4 I say.

Well, thats a hard desision. but like other people said: it might be best to amputate his leg, He will have a little trouble in the end but he will get the hang of it and be happy. There is really no need to put him down so amputate his leg and help him out and take good care of him.

I can't believe you are letting your dog suffer while you get on the computer and ask what should you do!! If the leg has been mangled so badly there is no saving it, have it amputated. You will watch in awe as your dog runs, plays, and does everything almost as he did before losing the leg. Dogs are totally awesome when it comes to their adjustments to handicaps. Have you never seen any of the video's of the dog with no front legs?! It walks on it's hind legs and while it cannot actually run, it can hop amazingly fast. It also can lay down and get back up with just her back legs.

Uh amputate his leg.. ask any one legged person and they will tall you the walking trouble is nothing.. what counts is you are still alive. Thats like saying well just pull the plug cause now he's handicapped.. I have seen 2 legged dogs that were happy and got around just fine, paralyzed ones too.. Dont give up on your dog so easy.. I know I never would Dogs are survivors.. four legs or none they are happy, we humans should learn from them.

PS I cant even believe a vet would suggest that.. stupid. Why dont we just euthanise every handicapped person/cat/dog then?? at least we will get the better parking then.. ha ha not funny

If you can afford to, amputate the leg. Most dogs get along just fine on three legs.

Oh get off it.. TONS of dogs lose a leg due to accident, or cancer or any number of reasons.. They do GREAT with 3 legs.. If you put a dog down just cause he needs his leg amputated.. Don't even bother getting another dog!

One of the great things about dogs is that unlike humans, they don't feel sorry for themselves. They adapt and move on. Have the leg amputated and let the dog recover. His ability to adapt will astound you.

My dog was also hit by a car. She had a broken pelvis,an acute facture on one leg, and the other back leg was gone form the knee down. She did very well with only 3 legs. It didn't seem to both her once the other leg was out of the cast.

If those are your only options, amputate, dogs do very well on three legs.

I have a friend that had a dog with three legs. It was strange but the dog adapted. Is the dog going to have a good quality life? Will it be suffering? Those are the questions you need to answer yourself.
