I got bitten by a mosquito yesterday on my forearm and about 30 minutes after it happened, I noticed it had swollen up to about 2/3's the size of my forearm. It was also turning kind of purple. When I woke up this morning the size had decreased, and it was normal colored, but it started itching and it was hot to touch. Throughout the day it swelled up again, and it is back to covering about 2/3's of my forearm again. Does anyone know what is going on? Should I be worried?
I read somewhere that after people get bitten by mosquitoes a lot they can become immune, but they can also start getting allergic reactions, and I have gotten quite a few mosquito bites lately so I think that might be it. So does anyone know if that could be the case?

The same thing has happened to me my whole life. They get hard and warm to the touch, and swell up really big.

The best thing that I have found for it is to take a benadryl and to rub benadryl lotion on it. It should heal up within a day...

Good Luck!!! AND.... try not to itch it... it makes it worse!

You should probably see a doctor to be sure. However, if I had to guess, I'd say you were allergic to mosquito bites. What you are describing is exactly what happens to me whenever I get bitten. The bitten area swells up literally, 5 times the normal size of a bite, feels warm to the touch and sometimes will turn a bit on the purple side. Plus sometimes they even blister and then, well, kinda oozes. (gross I know) Also I am a magnet for them. They just never miss. It's like I have a neon sign that only they can see that flashes "free buffet". When I visited some family, in NC over one summer, I was bitten 17 times. I have decided to never go outside during dusk and not to leave the house without the repelent!
PS for the itch I use any over the counter cream that is super maximum strength.

My son, now 10, reacts the same way. His sisters age 6 and 9 have normal reactions to mosquito bites. 1.)The best prevention is mosquito repellents of course (try a laundry dryer sheet tucked into the back of his pants, it works), and try to keep long sleeves and pants on him, as long as its not too hot out. 2.)Our pedi prescribed some minty scented liquid to put on the site of the bites. (Came in a large brown bottle but I cannot remember the name, sorry) 3.)You should take him to the pedi when he has one of these bites, tell his doc this is his normal reaction, see what he has to say regarding this. Maybe ask him for the liquid I mentioned above, its good to have on hand. And you do want to make sure the bites are not getting infected as this can get into the bloodstream and into the bone, though you did say that he's not a big scratcher so that may be one less worry for you. Basically just let your son's Dr see his usual reaction and he will let you know if this is normal in some cases, or if something further should be done. Good luck!

It is not likely you are allergic to mosquito bites. It could be something other than a mosquito that bit you, or possibly you are scratching it or irritating it on the edge of a desk.
You can ice the spot, put hydrocortisone cream on it, or try household ammonia on a cotton ball and dab it on to kill the itch(ammonia is not standard medical advice).
Below is a link to a handy place to get medical information and is specific to mosquito bites. Better not to get mosquito bites if you can help it as they are carriers for a couple diseases.

You must have some type of allergic reaction to the bite. Are you sure it was a skitter? I have never seen that happen.

Could it have been a spider and some stinging bug?

If it isn't gone in a couple of days, I would see a doctor.
Good luck. Pops

I've never seen a mosquito bite bigger than a dime so I would go and get that checked out. It may be infected due to the proboscis being lodged in the bite.

I think the immune thing is a rumor, but the swelling is the allergic reaction. Try rubbing some rubbing alcohol on it, the hold a piece of ice or an ice pack on it if the heat is bothering you. They can get really big, so don't necessarily worry about it. If it starts to get really crusty or hurts to touch, then you may want to go to the doctor.

yup, your allergic. I have one child who would do that exact thing when she got bit. She was bit one time on her eyebrow and her entire eye swoll shut. Take some Benedryl, and use the Benedryl spray for the itch. Good luck
