You have to apply the prophet test, which has three parts.

First, the prophet has to give a prophecy consistent with other valid prophecies. Since another vindicated prophet said he was the only Son of God, another self-proclaimed prophet claiming to be God's son (only when he is late in taking his Thorazine) isn't speaking the truth.

Second, the prophet must live a life of exemplary holiness. Jesus, a man like us in all things but sin, exemplified virtue, from charity to courage. The lunatic in the psych ward almost certainly exhibits a range of bizarre behaviors rather than virtues.

Third, the prophet is vindicated by God with miraculous deeds, such as walking on water, feeding 5000 people with 5 loaves and 2 fish, healing blind and crippled people, and raising the dead. Again, the ball is in the psychotic claimant's court.

Cheers,
Bruce

Actually bible verses CAN answer this.
The difference is between a lie and the truth.
Christians are not as gullible as you think.

If someone is claiming to be someone mentioned in our Holy Bible, then we must take the authority of this bible as truth to measure against any claim against it.

1. Read the Book of Revelation. (Last book of the Holy Bible)

2. Mark 13:32 (Concerning the return of Christ) "No one knows about the day or hour. Not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

3. Mark 13:5-6 "Jesus said to them , "Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name claiming "I am He." and will deceive many."

4. Mark 13:7-23 These are also events that need to happen before Jesus comes back to the earth. (This is called "the second coming of Christ") This is described in the rest of this chapter.

5. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 "The Lord himself will come down from heaven, with the voice of the Archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. (This is called the Rapture of the church.)

Yeah, when were you born?

I don't recall this wonderderful event described in the above scripture has happened yet.

Do you understand why sensible Christians do not believe in every Tom, Dick or Harry crackpot that comes along claiming to be God's son?
Son, there is more, but do yourself a favor and please read your bible so you too will not be deceived

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your saviour and you have a personal relationship with him then you are a son of God, 1 John 3:1, the problem arises when we don't live like it. When the Holy Spirit lives within you which is proof of your salvation and you do contrary to what the bible says people get upset. Of course calling yourself a son of God and actually being one is another. ALot of people think to day that they are a son of God and they don't even believe in the Bible. I guess as the Bible says on judgement day, we will be known even as we are known. You will be either with the sheep, with Jesus the Shepard, or with the goats, with the devil in a fiery flame.

All Christians are sons and daughters of the living God. Since Jesus came into the world there have be no prophets but only his followers with faith. The next prophets are not due until the end of times.

God is truth and with the Holy Spirit as a guide all His children can discern truth.

You refer to David Koresh who was killed near Waco, Texas a few years ago. I live about 50 miles north of where he died and for years traveled to Waco once a week as part of my job. One very fundamental thing (and there are many) that sets him apart form Jesus is that there have been no witnesses, at least not that I have found, come forth testifying that they saw him after his resurrection. Jesus had one, Koresh didn't. Therefore, the Resurrection makes all the difference.

As a christian I am an adopted child of God because I believe in God's true Son which is the Christ, Jesus. Now the difference in between me and someone falsely claiming to be the true son of God is that they may be trying to deceive us into not believing that God isn't real or that we ourselves or all gods. They may possibly be carry the antichrist spirit.

If you believe that Jesus is the son of God then you have to read that in the Bible or learn it from General christian belief, the bible and christian belief state that only Jesus is the son of God, none other.
Why on earth would you believe that christianity is telling the truth about his being the Son of God and lying about his being the only one.

Well, the odd thing is that every believer is a son of God. Maybe adopted, but sons all the same. People just don't get it, that the Lord WANTS them to stand up and act like His kid.

If not a christian, who ever is making this claim is a liar because they are saying they have Jesus, when they don't. That's the only way to be a son.

Because the Bible tells us how Jesus will come again.
All others are false.Which really baffles me when these so called "believers" follow people like Koresh or those that dies in Jones Town....pathetic.

"In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go and prepare a place for you, I WILL COME AGAIN AND RECEIVE YOU TO MYSELF; THAT WHERE I AM, THERE YOU MAY BE ALSO." John 14:2-3

"Behold, He is coming with clouds, and EVERY EYE WILL SEE HIM, EVEN THEY WHO PIERCED HIM. AND ALL THE TRIBES OF THE EARTH WILL MOURN BECAUSE OF HIM. EVEN SO, AMEN." Rev. 1:7
