I'm glad everyone has such a positive attitude.
!. The endangered species act, passed by congress(the government) and enforced by agencies of the the government.
2. Pollution control laws. passed by congress(the government) and enforced by agencies of the federal, state, county and city government. The cop who cites you for littering the highway, is part of the government.
3. Every land management agency in the federal, state, county and city government has rules and regulations concerning the land they manage. Their punishment for infractions is usually quite sever.
Some years back there were concerns about the amount of pollution in water and land in the US. While the environmental organizations were the loudest voices. The laws were passed by congress and the "government" enforced those laws.
We can complain they are not doing enough, but lets direct those complaints to the legislatures who don't pass the laws or don't provide the funding we think is necessary. The government can only do what the laws allow and the legislatures fund.

The government is not helping, rather the government is the bureaucratic precipice between old practice and new practice. Government is standing in the way of progress. It's all about bureaucratic agenda and your money. The famous words of delay and deferment, "We need a ten year 50 million dollar scientific study to analyze the issue before we may make a difinitive decision."

Funding the EPA ($7.2 billion in 2008), passing countless laws prohibiting things like Freon and DDT, and so on. Come on! These things are not exactly secret! Do some research. And by that I mean more than asking a question here.

The government conducts research.
The government formulates and passes law.
The government enforces the law.
The government fines or jails the lawbreakers.
Does the government do enough? Too much? It depends on who you ask, but I think it's both. Unfortunately it sometimes depends on who is in office on whether various agencies work with full vigor in performing their jobs.

As little as they can get away with. They don't care about tomorrow they only care about how much money will big business put in my pocket today.
If you think Al Gore is the same way, consider this, the democratic party wanted him to run for president again, he turned them down saying, I can not accomplish anything good for America as a politician...
