Carlos Slim, the richest man in the world - Aug. 6, 2007

Did you know that Mexico is not a poor country? Mexico is the world's 5th largest oil exporter and has the world's 12th largest economy, by GDP, according to the World Bank?

Isn't it reasonable to assume that there is so much poverty in Mexico, because the Mexican government is corrupt and the Mexican elite are greedy?
And if that is true, aren't we simply perpetuating the root cause of the poverty in Mexico when we take in their poor and relieve the pressure, that should be on the Mexican government, to do something about poverty?

ianmcilnay, Did I suggest that it should be taken care of by anyone other than the Mexicans? No I did not! But, since you brought it up, the poverty in Mexico is obviously a problem for the US or we wouldn't have an estimated 12,000,000 illegal immigrants here. So maybe it should be something that the US government is interested in.

SMsmith, No! I want those of us who support illegal immigration for humanitarian reasons to understand that their hearts may be in the right place, but they need to use their brains; because their way is not going to end the poverty in Mexico. Their way is only going to perpetuate the poverty in Mexico and increase the pressure of the US to become just as impoverished as Mexico.

AConcernedCitizen, I agree! I'm simply trying to make people understand that supporting immigration is only making the situation worse.

Dog Tricks, Thanks for the info. I will do some research on it.
And I love your avatar.

I FIND IT AMAZING THAT SO MANY OF YOU DIDN'T BOTHER TO READ MY QUESTION. HOW COULD ANYONE READ MY QUESTION AND THINK THAT I SUPPORT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION? HOW COULD ANYONE READ MY QUESTION AND DISCERN THAT I THINK THE US SHOULD DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN PRESSURE THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT TO FIX THEIR OWN PROBLEM?
YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ASSUME?
WELL LEAVE ME OUT OF IT. IF YOU ASSUMED THAT THIS WAS A PRO ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION QUESTION, YOU MADE AN A S S OF YOURSELF. NOT ME.

Mac, You're obviously a very intelligent person, so I don't know why misinterpreted my question?
Did you know that Canada's economy is almost the same as Mexico's, based on GDP? And you are correct. Canada is the richest country in the world, based on quality of life statistics, according to the UN.
So, even considering population differences, the quality of life in Mexico can only be explained by corrupt politics and greed.

2007-09-11 16:17:00 · update #7

Roxiecat, Thanks for reading the entire question.
I don't see how anyone can look at Mexico and see anything other than a corrupt government. If only we could get the Democrats and our President to take a good look, maybe some real actions would be taken to fight poverty.

The governent of Mexico is one of the most corrupt in the world. People are either semi-rich...or extremely poor. At least in the US we don't have huge gaps between classes

This is terrible that the they live in poverty. Soon it will be us also. In Ohio I know of 6 factories in my community that have moved to Mexico to cut their costs. Something is definitely wrong here. There government is making us suffer by allowing cheap labor and making it more affordable for our jobs to go down there. And yet the people that need to benefit from it being our workers and theirs are not. I'm not saying that I am being hateful towards the Mexican citizens for working in a job doing something that I used to. I think it stinks that the wrong people are benefiting. Everyone as a whole needs to take a stand against bad leaders. In the USA its not we the people anymore its I am the government or I am the president and nothing else matters.

Nothing similar to the United States of America. They simplest care approximately wealthy individuals, however this additionally happens in every single place the arena. Rich and Powerful individuals, almost always guys, manage the lifetime of the vast majority of the Human race and that is in line with French thinker Michael Foucault (October 15, 1926 – June 25, 1984)

It was said 3 years ago that Bill Gates w/ all his $$ could buy everybody in the U.S. a brand new Cadillac.Imagine what "Slim" could do for Mexico. No wonder Mexicans are angry people.Their gov. hates them, the U.S. gov./elites use them, and U.S. citizens can't stand them.Bottom line is they need to be deported so Mexico can take care of their own.Peace blood.I'm out.

If every illegal alien would take to the streets of Mexico City instead of Los Angeles next May-Day, maybe they could bring about change in their country. They should at least try. It's not up to America to bail out Mexico, it's up to Mexico.

The rich in every country do not care about the poor, NAFTA was a cause of many Mexican farmers losing their jobs, they could not compete against American Agra Business and farm subsidy program. Now they come to the US to work.

boy u don't know squat in Mexico, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer.

the poor get subsidized beans and tortillas. so they wont starve.

we tried to help many countries in africa with food and the military makes sure none reaches the starving. we helped out Mexico alot with nafta and now walmart running a chain down there.
but Mexico has stolen alot of houses of US retired people with all there life savings put in it......and if you do open a business you can lose to any mexican that wants it. they just fight you in court tell you run out of money, they even stole huge factories from the US after we built them and made them productive......they dont deserve no more help, but we always do....like red cross comes running when they hit by natural disasters.

I lived in baja california dos anos...Mexicans are so kind at first because you a gringo lookin like dollar sign,...but wait and see the true colors of the freindly.
dont get me wrong I had a blast ...but keep your guard up.

You are correct. By allowing all the illegals to come over here and suck our resources dry, we are enabling the corruption of the Mexican Government to continue.

I have listened to the news every day for the past---way too long telling us of people in the US who were starving- freezing on streets in NYC--which I actually have seen myself--I have seen people in Philadelphia lying on benches and under cardboard boxes and begging for our leftovers to eat.....I have seen mothers and children in NYC sleeping on the streets----WHEN DID THE US DECIDE TO BECOME UNCLE SAM WITH THE DEEP POCKETS FOR EVERY OTHER COUNTRY BUT OUR OWN? HAS ANYONE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE POVERTY AND SICKNESS THAT PLAGUES THE US?

We are also neighbors with Canada--I don't see their country asking us to help them with their poor---oh that's right, they are richer than we are......
