To me this doesn't make sense but it "must" be for a reasonable reason... I even noticed in ambulances overseas.

The ambulance letters on the front are reversed so they reflect properly in your rear view mirror and can read it. That is the purpose so you can see what vehicle it is in your mirror.

When you're the driver in front of an ambulance, if you notice sirens behind you and don't know it's an ambulance, if you look in your rear-view mirror, you'll see the word ambulance the right way.(Not backwards to someone looking in the mirror.)

It isn't upside down, take another look!
It is, however backwards.
When you look in your rear view mirror to see what is rolling up behind you with lightsw flashing and sirens blaring, the bacward word reads AMBULANCE correctly, and right side up.

Not upside down, just backwards.
This is so that when you see one in the rearview mirror, it reads correctly. You see AMBULANCE in the mirror.
