Swimming is a great cardio workout, which not only burns a lot of calories (therfore fat) but also increases your health, lung function etc.
It is also an excellent anearobic workout (strength training) by stretching and toning most of your bodies muscles.

Because swimming will exercise just about every muscle in your body and therefore burn calories.
It will also tone up all muscles in one go so that you do not end up with any particular muscle group looking over developed.

Lard mostly! Burn more calories than you take in and you lose weight, except in the case of a few rare medical conditions.

Swimming does work the entire body but your body needs fat for bouancy. If swimming is your regualr workout, your body may be reluctant to release fat.
