I gave up smoking for quite a few years, and when I stopped I did just that - decided that's it, and didn't have another one.
A serious bout of depression and wanting to do something to harm myself ended up with me starting to smoke again.
I saw it as a more acceptable form of self-harm that wasn't as obvious as cutting myself and leaving scars.
I've now smoked again for many years, and I know that I smoke more when I am feeling stressed and depressed. Even though it is becoming increasingly difficult to smoke in public places I still feel that it is a more acceptable way of harming myself.
For the moment nothing and no amount of pressure from adverts, the government or elsewhere is going to make me stop.
I know I can if I want to, but I will do it when I want to not when someone tells me.

Good question. I stopped, had argument with hubby while pi**ed and thought s*d it and bought 20.
But reading through the answers are we all just looking for an excuse to start again? We blame certain events but it is down to our own lack of will power.
I am now at the stage of being scarred to try again, probably sounds daft to a non smoker

i gave up smoking for 3 years after i was diagnosed with cancer but i started smoking again because of stress and depression. i was going through a really tough time as my son was going through tests for autism 6 years ago and i wasn't getting much support through it and i turned to smoking again. i am now trying my best to quit but without much success as i have allergic reaction to patches, can't stand the gum and the lozenges make me sick so i am trying to just do it with will power.

i had quit for 3 months and my best friend died in her sleep of a stroke. Stupid reason, huh? But old habits die hard and the stress was just something that caused me to go right back to my most familiar way of fighting it. That was 3 years ago tho, and i haven't tried again. Bad maiden, silly maiden.

quit for a year and a half, left my husband, went to a hippie music festival with a brand new boyfriend and was "just going to smoke for the weekend"....which was 3 years ago. Definitely one of my more foolish moments.
The good thing is...you did it before so you know you are capable.

I quit for about 5-6 months after my 18th birthday last year in june, then i started again in january this year because my bf and i were fighting and he was stil smoking.
Just try quit again, if you did it last time you can do it again!
Good Luck

Alcohol makes it really hard for me not to smoke. Not only does drinking itself make me want a cigarette, but so does being around all the other people who smoke when they drink.
Also, one time I started a new job and I wanted to make friends with everybody so I took smoke breaks with them.
I have finally stopped smoking again except for the occasional cigarette when I--guess what--drink.

None of the above. Just because I like it. I enjoy relaxing with a cigarette.

I started up again when I got home from my grandfather's funeral. Crazy how just one gets you hooked all over again.
