Credit card debt consolidation adds up all your unpaid balances and converts them into a single payment. This payment is far lesser than each of the individual payments.

When you finalize a plan with a debt consolidation company, the company repays your dues to your creditors. Then you make a single payment to the consolidation company every month. Your average new interest rate is much below the old interest rate.

Go to this site: http://www.nfcc.org/ . You can find a company in your area. These are legit non-profit companies. They offer free credit counseling and have a debt management program available, if you qualify, at no fee.

There are a lot of companies promising debt repair/counseling/consolidation but they take their fees up front and trash your credit.

Dont pay someone to help. You dont need them. EVERY PENNY you have needs to go to attacking this debt, not to some ripoff company that does NOTHING for you.

If you are 6 months or more past due, you can probably settle for less then you owe... probably around 50%. Call them and make deals once you have enough to give them a lump sum. Get any agreement in writing, and do not give them access to draft your checking account.

As for other debts that are current, start paying off the smallest one. Throw every penny you have at it. Get a second job. No more going out to eat... Once it is paid off, start attacking the next debt. (This whole time you are still making minimum payments to ALL debts)

Make a budget on paper and stick to it. Make a plan, stick to it, and get yourself out of debt.
