Are you now stuck on the Gold Coast? or have you made other plans?
If you are stuck on the Gold Coast my best advice would be to avoid Surfers Paradise at all costs. The other beaches and areas are fine during the day...but aim to be indoors from around 6pm each night or you might run into a lot of teenagers.
Further south than the Gold Coast you won't run into too many Schoolies, other areas aren't as popular. In particular, if you are away during the QLD schoolies week NSW won't be too busy as they have their schoolies week the following week and QLDers are more likely to be at Surfers.
If you are on the Gold Coast, don't worry too much though, most of the Schoolies don't surface much during the day and its often rather quiet.

Yes it is very busy during schoolies week on the Gold Coast.
My year 12 teenager wants to fly down for it, but after what I see on the news on the drugs, the drunks, arrests and rapes there is NO way I'll let him near the place. It is far too risky.
Why not fly up to Cairns instead - best of all the worlds up here... and not busy! Heaps to do....

If you can get out of it & do it later - then RUN. It is a nightmare. I had to be there (Surfers) last year for two days during Schoolies on business. There isn't a job on earth worth me doing that again.
I love teenagers, but when they're wasted in huge numbers and totally out of control it is ugly.
Just some examples I know of:
A friend's shop on Cavill Av broken in to because somebody's girlfiend wanted a display poster of Paris Hilton. Trashed - evidently because they discovered that the poster was glued to a concrete block. Thousands of dollars damage.
SAME friend (not their week, was it?) Had to call an ambulance for a girl having a seizure on his front lawn (Ecstasy use) and call police to remove three teenage boys throwing up on his porch.
Melbourne friend's daughter pushed down stairs (broken wrist, fractured cheekbone - she was drunk also) at a night spot by girl who thought she was "looking at her".
Classmate of the above taken to hospital with severe dehydration (Ecstasy). Boyfriend plus 3 others arrested for D&D after a brawl.
If you really need this holiday, try to change the dates (shouldn't be too hard - accommodation is at a premium during Schoolies) or run, don't walk to another destination.
ESPECIALLY if you have young kids.

yeah, that is a really bad time to be there. it is just way too busy. perhaps if you have a place up in the hinterlands or something though, it should be okay? i would just avoid surfers paradise and the theme parks.
maybe go to the sunshine coast instead? it is still going to have a few schoolies, but not nearly as much as the gold coast. there are heaps of great places there to stay, and there is plenty to see and do, with just as easy access to brissie.
good luck, hope you have a good holiday
