I am trying to learn more about Islam, so far i have two very differnt translations of the Quran. (and i am not too impressed with Sam Harris's verbatim quoting of one with a rather low reputation)

Are there any differences in which versions are preffered by different groups?

Please list the translator (of course) and the publisher or distributor.

Read the Holy Bible ---Read the Holy Quran------Same story-same people different interpretations. Any wonder as the latter was written with the aid of a Christian!!! (read this on introduction inside English version) Was in the house of a Pakistani gentleman a couple of weeks ago..he was the equivalent of a preacher (can't think of the name) he knew the Quran back to front verbatim...and the bible...and he treated them both with due reverence !!
I think you need to be digging a little deeper for the truth, maybe even pre the "old" religions !!!

The point with these books is often, that they were great poetry once, until someone had the unholy idea of imposing them on the people. Goodbye Poetry in with the doctrine.
I am the I Ching according to my friends. Occasionally I do a reading for someone with a question. Works fine for me.
What I understand of people coming from Quran countries and I´have been around them most of my life, their life stile is more culturally imposed by circumstances in the desert and all that.. The Quran fits neatly into that stile more or less. Living like the Old Testament as the West does, is even more of a Fairy tale so to speak. Christianity swears by the New T, but preaches the Old T with a Vengeance.... Are we sheep or not.?

No translation will give a perfect portrayal of the actual Quran but Yusuf Ali's translation is the best. Get it with the commentary if possible.

Yes there are many false qur'ans especially in its translation.I am a muslim who do not know the arabic language which is presented in the Qur'an.So my interpretation is depend on the translator. We should be aware and know well who is the translator whether a muslim scholar or not.If it is translated by non muslim I think he will mislead intentionally the real meanings of the contents of Qur'an.So in Indonesia I use the formal qur'an's translation from the Religion Affairs Ministry which has been printed by PT Internusa.Plesase search the Qur'an's translation made by wellknown muslim scholar in your country.I hope you will find it by asking the management of the nearest mosque to your home.

Yusuf Ali I think has a very good Translation. Any Quran that was translated for the purpose of making Islam looking bad will obviously not be a very good source (and take care there are many of those these days).

Here you can try for this free copy and see if you find it to be accurate :

and btw I can read the Real Quran in arabic so if you need any verification for any part (because you know none of these translations are 100% perfect compared to the Real Quran) then I'll be happy to help ya.

Probably the version that advocates the most slaughtering of infidels is going to be nearer to the true translation
