I could understand the smell if it was a hound breed, but your breed should not have that odor. You may want to take your pup to the vet and see if he has a skin condition.

Labs and goldens and even collies commonly get kinda stinky, even if their owners are used to it. They just do -- it's not very unusual. Still, it shouldn't be unbearable. Bathe him as frequently as the odor becomes unbearable rather than when he gets a little gamy, and try using different shampoos to see what works best. Try switching foods. Brush some baking soda into his coat, and use something like the FURminator or a curry comb to get loose hair out of his coat. This hair has already been shed but it is trapped under his longer coat of hair. If odor persists, ask a groomer or veterinarian. There could be other issues involved that a professional can diagnose and treat.

"we bathe him constantly "

That's your problem right there.

When you bathe a dog it strips the dog's coat of its natural oils. When you overbathe or bathe constantly like you say, you cause the dog's natural oils to go into production overload. This causes MORE doggie odor.

Overbathing also leads to dry, itchy skin, which in turn can lead to skin infections from all the itching.

Dogs should be bathed once every 6 months unless obviously dirty. Daily brushing will keep them clean in between.

Stop bathing him so much, give his skin oils time to relax, feed a high quality food (some examples; cannidae, innova, solid gold) and you'll start to notice less odor.

well call the vet to get a real truthful answer
but what we did was
bathe the dog once a month cause bathing it more than once have dry out the dog's skin
and we vacumbed everyday or every other day
and do a regular grooming everyday
and try to keep your dog out of mud puddles
cause then they really smell
and use some air freshners
and somecandles that are out of knocking reach
of dogs and kids bye

Hi...there is a skin shampoo you can get from your vet....it's not very expensive...no worries...but what i must say is, is that dogs do not need to be bathed all the time...their bodies produce natural oils for the skin and hair and when you keep bathing them you dry out their skin and hair which is possibly causing that "dog smell"... a dog gets a bath MAYBE every 3-4 months....especially the bigger dogs...I have an American Bulldog that gets a bath every 3 months...of course when he is in the snow and mud he gets a sponge bath but other than that.....and he smells great and his hair is so soft.....no worries...buttalk to your vet as well..especially about the shampoo...good luck....DOGS RULE !!!! oh, i forgot to tell you my other dog, Lucky, she was a stray and i have had her for 1 year now and she has had 2 baths...she smells precious and her coat is shiny and smooth....it's all in the food.........

Lower grade kibble can cause dogs to have a musty odor and oily skin. Your best bet is to switch foods and have him groomed. If you don't see/smell any improvement in a month take him to the vet.

Your dog shouldn't have that odor with that breed. I recommend taking him to the vet soon. He might have a skin problem that would need treating, or it may be something else.
