most of the fairy/elf lore stems from the norse mythology which spread with their invasions of Ireland, Scotland, England, and Gaul (France), as well into Russia.
In the older mythos, the fairy or 'sidhe' were more like "demons" than 'happy butterfly people'. Beings that would devour a person with claw/fang or magicks.
The 'fairy-folk' now a days or those claiming lineage from them, usually are referring to their magical nature not the "demonic" natures.

Fairy and elf folk belong to wonderful stories like Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" and other such grand tales told to us as small children.
The exception to this may equate to "otherkin" as in those folk who cannot hack reality and hope beyond hope that they actually belong to a different class/species than homo sapiens.

Like Hestia's Priestess said - I've also heard it conjectured - by scholars even - that those know as the Firbolg and other such names were an older race that basically could be called aliens, having skills and abilities no human could have.
Somaybe they were aliens.

I think they were kidding. The faerie and elvenkind rarely mix with the disbelieving children of Men these days.
They are the most ancient peoples of the land, before mortals were allowed to populate the planet. :-)

They are possibly some of the earlier tribes occupying much of Europe.
There are also stories in the Norse and Celtic religions that talk about them......

It honestly depends on which culture you're talking about on what it entails.
In the Eddas we have light elves, dark elves, dwarves, giants....lol all sorts of things.
