I just heard a couple of people here and there saying that they "swear on my life", or "swear on everything I love". If they break that swear is that like a sin, or does it mean eternal damnation or something? (From a christian point of view)

Not really. Swearing, in that sense, is just promising. Promising to do something isn't a bad thing.

Swearing in the sense of using a "bad word" isn't bad either. That's just arbitarily labeling words as good or bad.

Whether language is "good" or "bad" is really about what you say with words, not which words you use to say it.

I prefer a little swearing to judgmental condemnation for almost nothing .It makes me wonder about those who so strongly over -react to a few words just what they might think and do if something else got their attention like the witch trials of Salem holier than thou is not good enough.
tolerate a few swear words your chance to use them is right around the corner and just where does it say anything about swearing in the religious texts of the world or the law libraries for that matter . it's a thin line to draw and usually not worth it.

"swearing" is an attempt to convince someone that you are honest & faithful. when you both know it is not wholy the case.

anyone that has any wisdom will not be swayed by mere words, but rather your character.

ever hear someone say "to tell you the truth....." think about that statement? is everthing else they say a lie, omission, half truth, or what ever new term they use to placate a guilty conscience.

why dont we speak plainly and truthfully?
let your yes's be yes and your no's be no. there is no need to swear by this or that. honesty & integrity are what backs your words.

my grandfather always told me to be weary of men who spoke alot and never realy said anything. (ie salepeople, polititions, so on, and so on)

No....it doesn't mean "eternal damnation", but the Bible does tell us not to "swear" on anything, that our "yes" or "no" is sufficient, as I understand it, because the things we "swear on" aren't ours to control. Usually people who use those "oaths" to try and make their "word" to appear more "honest" or "sincere" don't have very much confidence in themselves.

Well the Bible says not to swear anyway. Actually, they are sinning just to even use the term. You be sure not to do that because it is ignorance on their part.

No, because with repentance, all sins are forgiven.
But, the point in being a Christian, is to try to be Christ-like.
Obviously, Christ never sinned.. therefore, we try to be as pure as possible.. (not sinning) We all trip up and make mistakes sometimes.. but the point is to try and be the best we can be.

You are not supposed to swear.

James 5:12 - But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

"Swear" has multiple definitions. I think they may be using this one:

"6.to affirm, assert, or say with solemn earnestness."

So not really a vow or promise.
