OK so Ive NEVER used track changes or markup in Word, but the other day I opened someone elses document which had markup showing, and now whenever I open a new document, it defaults to showing markup.

Please note, I know how to get rid of it once the document is already open... what I need to know is how to stop it showing when I start a new document from scratch.

Thanks.

Maybe I wasnt clear enough.

When I open Microsoft Word and then I choose NEW DOCUMENT, it defaults to showing markup, but it never used to do this before.

I understand that opening someone elses document they have saved with markup will open with markup showing.

I am referring to a brand new document.

It used to open a blank document without the markup option selected, but now it does.

Not a problem. We'll fix it by changing your Normal.dot template. Here's how:

1. Close all copies of Word.
2. Open Word.
3.Click on the File->Save As menu item.
4.In the "File of Type" list box, scroll down to Document Templates and select it. The directory should change and there should be a Normal.dot file in it. DON’T SAVE THE FILE. Press Cancel instead.
5.Click on the File->Open menu item.
6.Select Normal.dot.
7.Normal.dot should become your open document.
8. Right-click in the menu area and deselect the Reviewing toolbar.
9.Save the template with File->Save. If you get a warning message about the Global template having been changed, click Yes.
10. Click on the File->Save menu item.
11.Navigate back to where you normally save your files. You don't actually have to save this time, so just click Cancel when you're there.
12.Close Word.

Word sometimes leaves the last directory used incorrectly set, so be careful the next time you open or save (especially!) a file that Word's pointed at the right place.

That should do it.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
