I’m looking more for danishes, donuts, cookies rather than cakes and such. If possible, I’d prefer some spots downtown or north side.

The link to Chicago Citysearch is below, with all the bakery listings. I hope this helps.

As for my knowledge:

Downtown, your choices are a bit slim. If you're interested in cookies and doughnuts and such, mainly, there are a ton of Corner Bakeries (at least three or four). Their baked goods are fair, in the danish and cookies department.

On the North Side, we're getting more residential, I suppose, so there are tons of great choices.

Bittersweet - a personal favorite. A bit fancy, but everything, and I mean everything, is amazing. It's on Belmont in Lakeview.

Bleeding Heart - crazy, organic, creative people. 'Nuff said. You gotta try it.

Patisserie P - in the heart of Uptown in the midst of all the Vietnamese restaurants. It was a true find when I discovered it. A diamond in the rough. They do Asian pastries, as well as Western. And all of it is awesome. It's a tiny place, family run, something you would never suspect was as good as it is. It's on Argyle, I believe.

Bennisons - up in Evanston on Davis and Maple. Easy to get to. This place is an old time bakery. Stuff everyone loves. Nothing too fancy about the look of it. Rolls, and cookies, and coffee cakes galore. But it just happens to be run by two master bakers, a very difficult and honorable level to achieve in the culinary arts. They have a line out the door on weekend mornings when people go to buy brunch treats.

Swedish Bakery - I've heard great things. It's on Clark in Andersonville.

Ann Sather - not really a bakery, but they do make the finest cinnamon sticky rolls in town. The finest. You can get them to go. And there are a few locations; Belmont and the el is one, and the other is also on Clark in Andersonville.

You might also want to try the Kosher bakeries up north. They sort of corner the market on danish and danishy coffee cakes and such. I love Kaufman's in Skokie on Dempster, near the Skokie Swift stop. Also, there's New York Bagel and Bialy, on Dempster, too.

Happy Sweet Hunting!

Chicago has a great selection of bakeries. Historically the city trade schools had baking programs that turned out many top notch bakers.
My favorite Chicago bakery is Dinkels. It has been there since 1922 and my family has been customers over most of those years. Their URL is... http://www.dinkels.com/

Drive down Northwest Highway (Edison Park, neighborhoods like that, etc), and there are tons of ethnic bakeries, specifically Italian, that are awesome!
