first, contact a class 3 firearms dealer. Then purchase the firearm from him. He holds the weapon. gives you the paperwork to fill out to apply for a class 3 firearms permit. This is handled thru law enforcement. It means that you go thru a complete background investigation. These can take as little as 3 months or as long as a year to complete. If you pass the background investigation, you then apply and pay $200.00 for a "tax stamp" which goes on the paperwork. This paperwork and tax stamp must stay with the firearm at all times. When stored, when carried to and from a shooting location and when shooting the firearm. If you pass, pay and receive the tax stamp, you can then go pick up your firearm. However, in states like California, forget it.
Prices on class 3 firearms went thru the roof after our "elected officials" of the democratic persuasion made it illegal for new class 3 firearms to be imported into, or built in the usa for civilian use. So, the only ones out there, are ones that existed prior to that act. Prices for a thompson for example went from around $1,000 to ( the last time I checked a few years ago) $7,000 or higher.

To legally own any fully-automatic firearm in the USA you have to 'jump through hoops' and drop a lot of money. Seriously, you have to apply for the Federal stamp, submit to a background check, pay for the tax and wait around on the results. Then you have to spend at least another $10,000. to buy a good, working Thompson provided you can even find one and someone who is willing to sell it.

Good luck.

Yes it is. You are mistaken that they are illegal. They are just heavily controlled. First of all, a fully auto Thompson will cost you $$$$$$$$$. And that is, if you can find anyone willing to part with the one they have. To legally own one you must pass a very extensive background check and have a special permit for the weapon.

First, you must be at least 21 years old, with a CLEAN legal record.
To own a full-auto Thompson SMG, once you have FOUND a weapon for sale on the market, and, if possession of a Thompson IS allowed in your state of residence, you must pass a Federal background check to prove you are a law-abiding U.S. citizen who is legally able to take possession of said weapon. THIS IS NOT A LICENSE OR 'PERMIT'! ! ! !
This procedure must be followed for each Class 3 weapon or device one purchases. Once the background check is done & the BATFE paperwork is completed, the citizen pays a one-time $200 'transfer tax' STAMP when the weapon is delivered to his possession.
With the market as it is today, the cheapest M1A1 military Thompson will probably cost between $15,000-20,000 min.
A 'shootin' buddy' of mine DOES own a full-auto 1927A1 model Thompson, and, even tho some other answers above are correct that BATFE CAN inspect weapons & storage, they have never inspected my bud's weapon or storage in all the years I have known him.

John W., there are a number of states that do not permit their citizens to own machine guns, or submachine guns.

Jonathan,

The biggest reason I don't own a Thompson is that I don't want to have to permit the BATF to come into my home and inspect the gun, my records, and my storage facilities any time they wish.

The fewer dealings I have with BATF, the better I like it.

To me, the hassle is just not worth it.

Depending on the state you reside in it can be as easy as filling out a few forms and paying a fee and a getting a federal tax stamp. The financial part of the deal is going to be a little more difficult though, since they are extremely expensive, if you can even find one for sale. You can get one with a shorter than legal barrel in semi auto from Auto Ordinance for around $1,200, but you still have to get a federal tax stamp for a short barrelled rifle.

Thumbs down my ***.

You can get a semi-auto for around 1000 dollars at a Dunhams with only a 20 min background check. If you want full-auto, you would need your class 3.

You would have to have a class 3 permet to own one and it would have to be allowed by your state to own sub machine guns. then you would have to find a class 3 dealer to buy the gun at. Here in Utah you can own anything. i have a buddy with a R.P.G. that he bought at Impact Guns not 5min from my house. they have Thompsons over there for sale. thay go for about $16,000. then the big clips are about $800. But i do have good news. You can put em on lay away.
