I am the newsletter editor for an honor society at my college and I would like some suggestions on good software programs to make newsletters. I have a regular pc computer.

for work i use microsoft publisher pro. it is easy and has ready made layouts to chose from as well as color schemes. but you can also make your own layout and it can be done in different paper sizes.
you can also use it to make fliers and other business related things. it is really a multi purpose program.

Adobe products are very good, but not always cheap. But they will be more than sufficient for your needs for sure. So I would definitely look at them and consider my options from the Adobe line-up. For graphic design I guess both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator might be valuable to you. They both excel in different ways, but can both be used for graphics design tasks. Illustrator is meant to be more about illustration/creation from scratch, whereas Photoshop is more about photo manipulation. Of course it can go beyond that, but that's kind of the bare bones view on it. But for newsletters, and maybe postcards, you likely want/need something more like Adobe InDesign. Newsletters seem more of a desktop publishing need than a graphics design need. So then you want something like Page Maker or InDesign from Adobe. The postcard I guess could go either way. You can buy bundles from Adobe which would have multiple programs in the bundle. There are ones catering towards things you have outlined. But again, they may not come all that cheap. There are cheaper and sometimes even free alternatives to Adobe products out there though. They might not be as robust, but they might suit your needs. GIMP is an image editor for example (a kind of rival to photo shop). It happens to actually be free. Other pay options would include Corel Draw, Corel Painter. For desktop publishing there is Microsoft Office Publisher, Corel Ventura, Quark Xpress, and/or Serif Page Plus (I believe all will cost you something). I think the one free option out there would be Scribus.

I like Adobe InDesign. Its a great desktop publishing / layout program to combine text and images.
Only problem is that its pretty expensive... I hope the College is footing the bill?
