Washington doesn't have a state income tax so you only have to worry about federal. With that you have the same rules as everyone else.

If you are an employee and no one else claims you, you must file a return, if you make over about $8500. If your parnents still claim you, it is less.

If you are self-employed, you must file a return if your income is $400 or over for the year.
