By Jesus' passion, death, and resurrection, our Jesus Christ restored creation by giving humanity back the HOly Spirit that God had breathed to Adam and Eve before sin.
"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come." John 16:13

Who the "first" follower was is a debatable issue, but in my opinion it was his cousin John. When Mary was pregnant with Jesus she went to visit her sister who was also pregnant at the same time. The baby inside of her sister moved in a very strange way that many people interpret as meaning that this baby was moved by Holy Spirits presence because Jesus was communicating on some level with this other baby. This is one of the first times holy spirit was very obvious to the contemporaries of Jesus. The reason I say that this baby cousin John , was the first follower, is because of this incident and the fact that this baby was to grow up to become the man we know as "John the Baptist". John the Baptist was the "opening act" for the ministry of Jesus. Holy Spirit has been a part of the Trinity from the beginning. These 3 can not be separated even though they are 3 separate entities,,,they remain as ONE. To be less verbose,,,,,,Jesus did introduce people to Holy Spirit,,,AND there were those that already knew Holy Spirit. The "followers" of Jesus were always in existence from the time his birth was foretold up until it became a reality. We know this because of St. Lukes story about Simeon and Anna. They waited for the birth of Jesus because Holy Spirit told them that they would not die until they had seen Jesus. I hope this was a help. Read about it in the book.

The first person to believe Jesus was the Christ and willingly lay down her life for that belief was Mary, the mother of our Lord. So yes, she knew about the Holy Spirit because she was visited by the Holy Spirit and that's how she became pregnant with Jesus (Luke 1). Technically, the angel Gabriel introduced her to the Holy Spirit, not Jesus.

He explained it to them.., read in the Gospel of John beginning with chapter 14, Then in Acts of the Apostles from chapter one throughout the book.
The Holy Spirit was the "power" behind the ministry of all the Apostles and disciples during Bible (New Testament) times.
Many of the teachings you gleen from the letters to the churches reveals the Holy Spirit further.
Acts 6:3-6; Acts 7:51- 56; "Acts 8: 14 -22; Acts 9: 1-18; and many more passages.

If He knew ANYTHING about the scriptures he did.
1 Samuel 10
9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul's heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. 10 When they arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he joined in their prophesying. 11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, "What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"
And then there is always Genesis 1. So those that did not know about the Holy Spirit, they weren't paying ATTENTION!

They were told that the Holy Spirit couldn't come until Jesus left. They were told that He would come and they were to wait for His coming before they went out to minister.

His mother Mary was His first follower and she had the Holy Spirit in her when the Holy Spirit over shadowed her to make her pregnant. Mary was full of grace.

The holy spirit came AFTER Jesus left earth. He sent the holy spirit (the comfortor) in his place.
