What causes cancer?
We do not know all of the risks and causes of cancer. However, there are a number of chemical, physical and biological agents that have been shown to trigger the mistakes in the cell blueprint that cause cancer. These are called carcinogens and include tobacco, ultraviolet radiation and asbestos.
A number of cancers share risk factors:
- one in nine cancers, and one in five cancer deaths, are due to smoking
- about 3% of cancers are related to alcohol consumption
- many cancers occur as a direct result of dietary influences, from infectious agents or exposure to radiation (especially skin cancers from ultraviolet radiation)
- some cancers result from inherited ‘faulty’ genes
- cancer is NOT caused by injury or stress.
Is cancer contagious?
Cancer is not contagious. There is no reason to avoid people with cancer, and in fact they will need your support and understanding.
We now know that some cancer genes are hereditary and so several family members may have the same or related types of cancer. This is due to an inherited genetic disorder, not spending time together.
Human papilloma virus (HPV), a virus that causes 70% of cervical cancer, is contagious and is transmitted via sexual activity. However, cervical cancer itself is not contagious.

If by catch, you mean from another cancer patient, then no you can't. At least not easily. Maybe if you were injected with cancer cells or something, but not in the case of normal contact.
You *can* catch HPV, a virus that causes penile cancer and cervical cancer. There is a vaccine for this now that is largely effective and circumcision of males also helps a great deal.
The HPV vaccine is the cancer vaccine you may have heard of, but you're not catching cancer, you're catching HPV which can cause cancer.
Final answer - no, you can't catch cancer in normal contact. There are STDs that can cause cancer but you're still not really catching cancer.

The only reason I can think that someone would believe you can " catch cancer" is because of all the media coverage surrounding the HPV vaccine because the human papilloma virus can lead to cervical cancer. In most cases cancer is not contagious but it is hereditary.
Hope this helps!

Your question is a little confusing. Cancer is not contagious. You can develop cancer...and certain things can increase your chances. For example: smoking, sun exposure, etc. And sometimes it is hereditary. Hope that's what you were looking for.

Arguably you can with cervical cancer. It is caused by a papilloma virus, which can be sexually transmitted. There is a vaccine available to prevent this.
