When I'm stressed I think too much about stuff and have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. If I wake up at all to use the bathroom I can't get back to bed and end up being tired all day long. I don't want to take any medicine for this. I want other suggestions.

Try taking a hot bath, or reading a book to take your mind off your own stresses, and make a routine every night of going to bed at the same time, your room should be cool, I mean temperature wise, and dark,. I also use a sound machine it helps to block out distractions for me. If non of that works I finally end up taking a sleeping pill.

It's a toughie. One thing is to avoid liquids, except to rinse, for two hours before bedtime. Another is that scientists say it is impossible to 'not think'. I'm probably a poor source of info, as I am addicted to Ambien, but as long as one MUST think, choose a pleasant and boring subject like a cool meadow with a lamb grazing. And don't feel alone. Ambien and the others sales are soaring ... life has just gotten too damn complicated! A hundred years ago, a farmer worked from dawn to dusk and then checked out with his face in his taters.Good luck. Tom G

I have really bad insomnia Before I started taking sleeping pills, don't discount them, they're great. I used to block my racy thought by fantasising. I made up a whole life with friends and acquaintances, a different profession,etc.. I'd get wrapped up in my fantasy world and found it easier to sleep. It still took awhile but at least it was pleasant!!!!!!!!!! Good luck and sweet dreams :)

You need a catharsis, which is getting things out of your head so you feel better. You need to start writing in a journal, about everything you think and feel. Write in it everyday and if you wake up in the middle of the night, write in your journal. You will soon see that this is a tool to help you cope with overloaded thoughts.

When this happens to me I focus on repeating one work over and over. It's like meditation (but I don't meditate). I find that focusing on repeating one word over and over gives me something to go back to if my mind wanders again. It's like Oops! I'm supposed to be repeating this word, not thinking about this other thing! See if it helps.
Another technique is to turn the radio on and leave it low, and concentrate on that instead of your thoughts. Good luck!

Drink hot Chamomile tea before you go to bed, that will calm and relax you. You will be sleeping in no time.

I took a self improvement course called the Silva Method. They teach you relaxation and imagery and a technique to get to sleep with.

Find something to occupy your mind that's boring enough to let you go to sleep easily. I went through US geography, then film directors. You can pick anything that interests you slightly.

try taking a hot bath before bed, listening to music, deep breaths...all of these can help reduce stress and anxiety & may help you go to sleep.
