the top is pretty short but curly (like under an inch) and the sides are tapered down. I have natural curls/waves but i want to know the best gel an technique to use to make my curls look their best.

the best thing you can do is go to the drug store and buy a few different types of product because you really never know what will work best with your hair type and what you'll like the best. i suggest buying a mousse, a gel, a wax and a pomade. you should be able to buy all of that for under $20... the most expensive isn't always the best. then just go to the house and get in front of the mirror and start trying. most products can be used wet or dry hair. also you may get different looks using a brush or comb or your fingertips. you really do just have to play with it.

Try using garnier's gum stuff. It's a texturizer. It'll hold the curls while controlling frizz and not making them crunchy (apply to wet hair).

once you get out the bathe, blowdry your hair till its damp then finger twist your hair like once you're apprehensive and your twist your hair around your hands lol (try this throughout your hair in many small sections for small curls and enormous sections for great curls) this helps to define your curls and it seems large! my frined does it and additionally the hair maintains to be in place, it doesnt frizz. :)

Gel them after they are combed out and nice and wet!

well wet,and use gel.it seems to work well for my brother so maybe it will for you.
