my daughter gets migranes, usually near the time for her period, or if she's stressed. she takes advil, and over the years has tried other remedies, including prescription drugs, but nothing seems to help much and she just has to wait until the headache goes away. can anyone tell me if you know of something that will work to relieve migranes? thanks.

Headache is among the most common medical complaints. Some of the reasons which cause headache are hypertension, over work, mental stress, indigestion, sleeplessness, fever, anemia, deficiency of oxygen in the blood, etc. Check out http://useinfo-headache.blogspot.com/ for more info

What prescription drugs has she tried? She should see a neurologist.

I've taken Depakote and Topamax, which you have to take every day. They help with the headaches, but have bad side effects.

Now I take Zomig only if I get a migraine. It usually works pretty fast. It makes me pretty tired so I only take it if I don't have to go out.

The other thing is to go into a dark quiet room and try to sleep, then when you wake up, get something to eat. That works for me a lot of times. Also avoid exercise or anything that might make your blood pressure go up (stress, noise) until the migraine goes away.

There are prescription drugs, and prescription drugs. My sister wound up on Imitrex (I think that's the correct spelling). It helped her some.
It's thought that at least some migraines are caused by subconscious anger. I had migraines when I was young, but they went away as I learned to deal with my anger.
For many people migraines fade in intensity and frequency with age.
Some people put their hands in hot water. This draws blood away from the brain, although it only works for a little while.
Finally, if she smokes, she's got to stop, as nicotine alone could be causing a lot of problems.

Ask your daughter's neurologist about the
V. N. S. (Vagus Nerve Stimulator.) It's de-
signed to treat epilepsy and depression.
What it can do for migraines, I'm not sure --
but if she doesn't get something else to help
her soon, she might develop depression...
and/or epilepsy!
Some people just happen to be "medication
resistant": their medications do not help them,
but there's no easy explanation as to why.

Best of luck to your daughter.

I've been suffering from migraines ever since I was 17 years old. Like your daughter, I usually get them around my period or during times of high stress.
When I finally decided to go to a neurologist about it, he prescribed maxalt to me. I'm now 22 and am still taking maxalt to relieve my migraines.
Another good option is to apply heat to afflicted area.

I've always found advil works best on my headaches as well. along with a nice hot bath, or being wrapped up with a hot water bottle with the lights turned off.
