I've been a scotch drinker for years, and have settled in to Dewars because it is the best well scotch I've found at a sane price; love the Glenlivit or Oban, just hate paying for it, and cant stand Jonnie Walker except the gold?

Here's the list I always refer to when I'm in the mood for something new.
Here's their "bang for the buck" list (from which I have a couple)

...and here's their "best of the best" list (still working up to some of these)

Whenever I'm looking for either something new or something as a gift for a connoisseur, I check back against these lists.

Bang for the buck? I'll bet there are plenty of cheap-o scotches out there that are less than $10 a bottle. I'm going to assume that you mean *good* bang for the buck. This question comes up pretty often at work and, while this is very subjective, there is some decent evidence for it to be Macallan 12.
First it's obviously a good scotch. Is it the best? No, but if you think it stinks then just mark me "thumbs down" and good day to you because you're in the minority. It's readily available and built from the ground up to be a class A spirit. From the sherry casks to it's nickname as the "Cadillac of Scotches". Each one in the line has unique characteristics that demonstrate that the distillers really understand how to bring out some fantastic features in scotch. Every time it's reviewed or graded it ranks very well.
In fact, Michael Jackson (no I'm talking about the drink critic) is widely acknowledged as an authority in scotch circles and he reviewed Macallan 12 at 91/100. Scotch that scored above 90 in his book were often twice the price and it was BY FAR the least expensive of that rank.
Personally, I like some other scotches but often times bars and restaurants don't have the lesser known bottles that I like and I can always count on Macallan to be affordable, consistent and top quality.
