Who ever gets to the door first opens it. I am female and if a guy gets to a door a bit after me I hold it open for him. If a mom with a baby in arms comes to a door after me, I hold it open for her. If a guy with arms full comes to a door about the same time I do, I'll hold it open for him.
I think the polite thing to do these days is for whoever gets to a door first is the one who holds it open.
Gender neutral courtesy should be the rule.

I get doors held open almost all the time. Usually in school, if I'm near enough behind the guy they'll hold it for me. Not everyone does of course. I sort of expect it. Not because I"m such a priss that I can't open a door for myself, it's just happened often enough that it doesn't surprise me, but I really do appreciate it. It shows they were taught something good by their mom and shows they're a gentleman(a little bit at least)
If a guy friend of mine didn't hold the door open for me I couldn't care less. I can open a door myself. If it hits me or something then I'd make a joke out of it, but I wouldn't get into a big huff about it
Oh and I always say thank you with a big smile on my face, since there's so little of that in the world these days, people could use a friendly smile
And I always hold a door open for someone if I'm close enough to, and I'd hold it for guys and girls

Personally, I love it. I always say "thank you" and I always mean it.
It's a simple gesture, but wow.
Before I moved down south where men have better manners than what I was used to, no one ever held doors open for *anyone.*
It's just a sign of respect, and nothing more.
If he doesn't hold doors open EVERY time, it's no big deal, a girl can get a door. It's not a slap in the face.

well it's respectful for a gentlemen to hold the door open for a woman anytime, but if your in a group of friends one of the guys should hold the door for the women to walk in first but they shouldn't freak out if they don't. It's not mandatory as if you had your g/f or wife then yes if it was your g/f or wife yes you should all the time no matter how long you've been together. opening the door for other women in the group is nice but no one should freak out if you don't!
but remember to always be a respectful gentlmen!!
hope that helps your question.

Oh YES>>we appreciate it. I think it is a dying art of showing a woman respect and any man out there that does do it for a female, I say, hats off to ya. Our elders were taught this by their fathers and over the years, men don't respect women like they used to. I don't think women expect it but if you will watch a womans face when it is done for her, she is soooo appreciative and she will give a slight smile and a sincere "thank you" . If you are doing this, please keep up the good work and also , when and if you have sons, please teach this to them also. It will be something that holds a special place in todays society, and that is simple respect and courtesy...Thank you for being a gentleman...

It is a sign of gentility (an old-fashioned concept, I know) but I appreciate it when it happens. I'm happy to see a guy hold the door for me, and I thank him whether I know him or not. I don't worry if it doesn't happen, though, and probably wouldn't say anything if a man failed to hold the door.

I love it when guys bf or non bf hold the doors open for me. I am a receptionist at a car dealership and the guys always open the doors for me and hold the doors open if they see me coming up to the door or that I am behind them! Its sweet and I tell them all time. So yeah call him what you want!

I think it is very VERY polite for a man and doesnt' have to be a boyfriend to open doors for women to be that should be "manners" women don't expect it all the time....but i know when i do get that treatment makes me feel good. My man does it all the time and i love it! But any guy that does it is a very good gentleman

I don't expect it, but it is nice. I was walking to the bus today with one of my friends, and he pushed open the door and held it for me. I was kinda surprised, but in a good way. If one of my guy friends didn't hold a door open for me, I wouldn't say anything. It wouldn't even cross my mind.
